Known for his work in professional ethics, he has produced a number of thoughtful works in ethics that are aimed at students and nonacademics, such as Happiness and the Good Life (CH, Aug'12, 49-6812). In the present book, the author makes the case that mottos--such as "Look before you leap" or its contrary, "He who hesitates is lost"--are not simplistic sound bites, but rather are fecund tools for coping in the world. He enunciates four generic functions of mottos: expressing the identity of individuals and groups; providing guidance as ends and means of behavior; motivating actions and habits; and justifying actions and policies. Along the way, Martin illustrates how mottos relate to both normative ethics and virtue ethics. The writing is straightforward and jargon free, without talking down to the reader. Invaluable Resource for Practicing Meditation with Children

Having dealt with high anxiety for much of my life, I have been overjoyed to find that meditation helps me to feel safe and calm, and to think clearly to distinguish between imagined threats and real threats. It has allowed me to open myself up to new experiences and to let go of the idea that if I can't be perfect, I shouldn't bother to try. My oldest son has demonstrated similar qualities since he was a toddler - he has been more than a little hesitant to try new things and slow to make friends. Like any good mom, I turned to the internet for help ;) I was lucky to find Lorraine's first book, Calm Kids. I loved the book so much that I decided to sign up for her course to teach meditation to children. Calm Kids is a great resource, but Lorraine's latest book, Connected Kids goes so much deeper. It is an invaluable resource for various types of meditation, how to use various tools like mudras, mandalas, and labyrinths, and why they are helpful. It also includes medical research and the proven the benefits of meditation for everyone - not just those with special needs. This book truly is wonderful for the general population, but Lorraine's detailed work on challenges that people with autism face and several specific balancing mindful activities make this the best book that I have seen for helping kids feel their best. For example, if a child cannot tolerate the food on his plate, she suggests practicing a gratitude meditation before eating where the caregiver and child explore the journey of the food to the plate (imagine the food growing as a plant and thanking sun, soil, water, as well as the farmer who cared for it, etc.) Kids become less afraid of unfamiliar foods and textures as they think about the effort involved in getting the food from a seed in the ground all the way to their plates - I've seen this work in my own home! I also love how at the end of each chapter, she asks the reader to check in with a centering thought for his or her own meditation practice. Having grounded children begins with having grounded caregivers. This is an excellent read with practical steps to follow (and also tips on how to advance to sensing what the child needs by having an open heart and mind rather than a strict plan to follow) - great for helping kids with special needs, as well as everyone else.

Awesome book, very informative and helpful and accessible. I have one daughter on the autism spectrum (high functioning) , a son who was adopted and has special needs and work at a Children's Hospital. I 've found something useful in the book for each of the people of I love!

Wonderful Even for Newbies

First, I should make clear that I am just getting started in watercolors. I got Painting Vibrant Watercolors by Soon Y. Warren as a long term plan. I figured I probably couldn't master her techniques right away - but that this would give me inspiration about what to work toward. It would also help me make sure I developed good habits by the beginning.

I was quite pleasantly surprised, in that I wasn't sure it would have a lot of "getting started" material for me. In fact, compared with several other books I got, this one is wonderful in some of its introductory material. Warren is encouraging and gentle. She encourages you to keep learning, to accept mistakes as the way to grow, to develop a personal palette, and to chart your own path.

She provides a wealth of practical advice. She shows visuals of how the exact same "named" color from different vendors can look quite different. She talks about developing your own color chart for this reason. She has gorgeous examples of lighting, reflections, surfaces, and more. She explains the differences between different types of paint choices with clear visuals.

Then she has step by step tutorials, with images shown of each stage, of how she creates her images.

I was quite pleased. I thought I'd have to hold onto this book as something I could use much later in my growth - but there was a great deal of information which was useful and helpful right away. I can also see that the book will be quite helpful even after I've been painting for a while.

Highly recommended for people at all stages of using watercolors.

Beautiful, useful, an inspirational book!

At first I browesed the stunning paintings that are photographed in this wonderful book. Then I began reading and rereading all the basic information on value, composition, types of watercolor paints, paper,and all the tips on materials. No, I don't think I can create such luminous and award-winning paintings as Soon Warren has in her book. But they are so beautifully done, it is an inspiration to me, and I want to try to create something of my own. Love this book and will be refering to it for many months and years to come. Thank you, Soon for sharing your wonderful art!

The first reviewer of this book obviously has only a scientific/academic perspective on the topics for which he/she criticizes this book. Anyone with any genuine expertise in Soon Warren's techniques would know that: 1) The metal powder she uses is always applied within a clear acrylic medium. This prevents oxygen from reaching virtually all of the metal, the source, by definition, of oxidization; and 2) the studies that "prove" fading of the Winsor & Newton colors Aureolin and Permanent Alizarin Crimson do not shield the paint from the deleterious effects of UVA and UVB radiation. Since all well framed watercolor paintings use special glass, which shields the painting from the damaging portions of light spectra, the colors do not fade. It's unfortunate that Amazon.com allows such irresponsible reviews written by those without the experience, expertise, and knowledge necessary to create a thoughtful and accurate description!

This book truly is an amalgam of easy to understand theory and descriptions of painting techniques honed to perfection by years of creating top-award winning works. Any watercolor painter from beginner to expert would benefit from this book.

This book make you want to go home if you are save. It teaches you how to be strong in the Lord and not your self. It also teaches you that this world is not your friend. The only thing going to last is what you do for Christ. Heaven is a free gift just believe Jesus paid your sin debt by sending his son to die for your sins and was buried and rose again for you. There is one thing for sure is death ,where will you spend it in heaven or hell ,there is no in between place ,believe that because tomorrow is not promised. Please chose this day where your home will be take God at his word and let every man be a lie.

I cannot wait for the day to come when me can see how Glorious Heaven Is. And to see MY LORD AND SAVIOR,JESUS CHRIST and to spend Eternity with GOD THE FATHER. The sublime descends into the ridiculous

I had already read this opera classic, first published in 1979, but I bought a copy for a hostess gift and read it again. Then my husband read it. I could hear him sitting in the john and laughing hysterically far into the night (actually, it didn't take him that long to read it, because it's only 80 pages long, with many zany illustrations.)

The first two "Tosca" anecdotes in this book are 'the' opera classics. You only have to mention 'Tosca and the trampoline' or 'Tosca and the firing squad' to an opera buff to initiate a bout of uncontrollable laughter. I truly believe Hugh Vickers's theory of the 'curse of Tosca.' A friend of mine caught a performance of this opera in Rome in 2005, while the cardinals were busy electing a new pope. All went well until the banquet scene, where Tosca is being blackmailed into sleeping with Scarpia, while her lover is tortured offstage. Well, in this performance, Scarpia's pants fell down just as he was lunging for the toothsome soprano. He had to sit down and motion for one of his thugs to bring him a safety pin. All Rome trembled with laughter before this Scarpia.

Although Vickers does not name the two sopranos who were immortalized by the trampoline and the suicidal firing squad, he does name places and performances so I'm assuming that his anecdotes are not entirely apocryphal.

All of the great stories are here: not one, but two Lohengrins who had to cope with vanishing swans; Rigoletto's sliding hump (I actually attended a performance where Rigoletto took off his coat and threw it on the Duke's throne--and the hump went with it. The not-so-hunchbacked hunchback sang the rest of his aria, then showed up in the following scene at the inn with his hump reattached).

One of my favorite stories concerning mechanical malfunctions involves an Edinburgh "Don Giovanni," where the conductor placed the Commendatore and his accompanying trombonists in the Gents' lavatory to get the properly ghostly sound effects--Unfortunately, "the long-defunct automatic flush system suddenly came torrentially to life at the exact moment of 'Di rider finirai pria dell'aurora' --and since the performance was being broadcast, B.B.C. Third Programme listeners were deluged even more powerfully than the spectators."

As Peter Ustinov puts it in his introduction to "Great Operatic Disasters," "There is no art form which attempts the sublime while defying the ridiculous with quite the foolhardiness of opera." This book is packed with those moments where the sublime, like Rigoletto's hump, momentarily descended into the ridiculous.

Opera Meets Mel Brooks

If you know opera at all, this is a hilarious read. You will laugh at fed-up (and clever) crews getting revenge on hard-to-handle divas and quick-thinking performers creative solutions to unbelievable technical disasters. This book sets out to prove--and does--that truth is weirder, and funnier, than fiction.

Lightweight

Some years ago, I picked up a copy of this slender volume on a remainder table at Chapters for a dollar. The price was about right.

This is a book cobbled together with a mximum of good intentions, by all impressions, and a minimum of hard work. It is a compendium of some, but by no means all, amusing operatic anecdotes as they have been passed about for endless re-tellings by careless and often indifferent story-tellers. The famous tale of the bouncing Tosca is dutifully trotted out and given a local habitation and a name--but it also appears in other books and in each of them has a different place and time.

An Amazon reviewer has quite properly remarked on the propensity of this book to attribute anecdotes vaguely to "a famous soprano" or the like.

Another Amazon reviewer criticizes the attribution of the role of Santuzza to Lily Pons--of all people!--in the 1938 season at San Francisco. It so happens that Pons did appear in San Francisco in 1938--in "Lucia di Lammermoor" with Tagliabue and the excellent but sadly forgotten Galliano Masini, as well as in "Le Coq D'Or' with Pinza. (That same season also saw Gigli and Rethberg in "Andrea Chenier" and in "La forza del destino", Rethberg, Pinza and Baccaloni in "Don Giovanni"; Stignani in "Cavalleria rusticana"--as Santuzza, of course--and Schorr in "Die Meistersinger". Oh, the riches of those days!)

This is a lightweight book, clearly issued without serious intention of hitting the comic heights. It is, indeed, lightly amusing, but should only be acquired at rock-bottom price.

Surprisingly Useful

I bought this book years ago as a self-help to accelerate my software engineering career. I had tried others and none of them really struck me as being very useful.
The book is actually exciting to read--it gets you energized. Rogers outlines a number of (Samurai) techniques that he uses to be effective in a business environment. It sounds corny but these techniques are easy to apply and work quite well. In my opinion it works well because the book is well-written, interesting and unique.
Sadly the book is out of print. It is the only motivational book I've ever read that really worked and worked quite easily.

This book is extraordinary. If you can find a copy, get it. The book is so well written and the techniques he explains really do help with current events. I was lucky enough to find a signed copy but was dumb enough to lend it out. If I get it back, I'll never loan it out again. I have to pick up more copies. It's that good. Thank you David Rogers, I am indebted to you.

this book reads fast, real fast.
this book costs little, quite little.
if you have any determination whatsoever, just reading this book will show you just how quickly you can set up the ground rules on how you want to live your life. The rules are the same no matter where you stand in history... ROGERS just had the guts and the wit to put it all together. The book doesn't take you by the hand, this book doesn't condescend, it just bluntly puts forth an old code into today's real life events. If you take it upon yourself to act, you will be the better for it.

get it, read it , apply it, call it your own. Years later, you realize how inexpensive this book was.

Rogers is a guy I would like to buy a drink to, not only for this book, but also for his other book about military strategy applied to business. In the course of my MBA, these were the two books I found to be the most down to earth, heads up (not in the clouds, not ladden with statistics or theories) and FUN to read.
