Beautifully written YA novel

There are good and bad things about Maria Mora's novel, Sunblood.
The bad: it's too short. I was left wanting more. I think there's a lot more she could do with the world she created, and I hope she'll follow up with a sequel. I want to know more about Caleb and Daniel. I want to know what other anomalies the sub-citizens may possess. I want to hear more about the Sunbloods.
The good: even though it's short, Mora managed to craft complex characters with fleshed out personalities and desires. She's created a very interesting dystopian world populated by those within the caste system (the sub-citizens v. the citizens) and the outliers (the Sunbloods) who inhabit the harsh wilds in the unprotected zones. The landscape is part Mad Max (dry, desolate, and barren) and part Total Recall (sadly, without Schwarzenegger) - but the story is entirely different from either.
Without giving too much away, the protagonist, Caleb, is a telepathic sub-citizen, used as a tool by the citizens. He is allowed to exist primarily because of his gift, yet feared for the same reason. The story follows his relationship with his keeper, Daniel, an ex-military man mostly shunned for choosing to work with the DCP and Caleb. Both characters - though different in caste - are pariahs, but are able to find acceptance in one another. It's a beautifully written story and well worthy of a follow up.

Really good - I hope a sequel is coming!

I've followed Maria Mora's blog for several years, and downloaded Sunblood to my Kindle as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed. The quality of writing and story here are on par with the best YA dystopian fiction out there (Uglies series, Divergent, etc.). My only criticism of the book was that it was short in length, and left me with so many questions and wanting more at the cliffhanger ending. I hope a sequel is in the works soon!
In Sunblood, we're introduced to Caleb, a 24 year old mind-reading sub-citizen, and member of the renegade Sunblood tribe, who was brought to the artificial protective bubble of City as a child from the harsh, sun-scoured world outside, so that his telepathic gift can be used by the System to find out who is telling the truth. Caleb's constant companion is his Keeper, Daniel, a former military man, who for reasons unknown has chosen this less-than prestigious assignment. But the comfortable relationship between Caleb and his Keeper is shattered the day that Caleb is accused of taking a bribe and lying about the testimony of a murder suspect. A death penalty seems certain for Caleb, since sub-citizens have no real rights. But with the grudging help of a scientist named Muriel, Caleb and Daniel may get a chance at survival and freedom, if they can elude the scrutiny of the System, and survive the unforgiving, burning sunscape of the borders, and the Sunbloods themselves.

Wonderful novella

Maria Mora's first novella is a lovely read. While there are one or two textual errors that could have been corrected, I am impressed with the quality of the book as many self-published novels one downloads these days are just full of typos, spelling and grammatical errors.
Mora's conceptualization of this post-apocalyptic society is clear and well-thought out. Her characters are interesting and rather than give away every wee detail she leaves the reader free to imagine motives, history and outcomes. She has developed her characters well enough to make them interesting and easy with which to connect. This novella could easily be the beginning or middle chapters of a full-on novel, and that novel would be one that I would read. Mora leaves the ending open enough to continue the story should she find that story within her. This reader rather hopes she does -- or has another novella in the works.
