About the Author
Dr. Julie Knapp, Ph.D., BCBA-D is a Pediatric Neuropsychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate. She is Executive Director of the Knapp Center for Childhood Development located in Boardman, OH, which specializes in the diagnosis, neuropsychological assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Knapp offers an International ABA Program assisting families from other parts of the world to travel to the US for ABA therapy. She offers remote training and supervision on ABA programs through a HIPPA secure website to families across the world who otherwise cannot find local ABA therapy or who want expert advice on their program. Dr. Knapp is also a Consultant at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and holds an appointment at Case Western Reserve University. Carolline Turnbull, BA, BCaBA is a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst at KidsLink Neurobehavioral Center in Twinsburg, OH. Carolline is a behavior consultant for home and school-based consultation and developed a dance class for children ages 3-6 with varying disabilities and their neurotypical peers. She completed her Bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology at Kent State University and her course work for her BCaBA at Florida Institute of Technology. Carolline has worked in the area of behavioral management of children and young adults with developmental disabilities for 15 years.

A Masterpiece

In "I'll Steal You Away" Ammaniti gives us two intersecting tales of people trying to escape the deadness and brutality of Italian provincial life, interspersing these stories with cameos, walk ons and diversions from a range of hilariously drawn characters.

And whilst I would agree that the one of these narrative threads - the story of Graziano Biglia, ageing Lothario and charicature of the Latin stud, desperately trying to conjure up a respectable future as the local boy made good, whilst being led by the nose by the skittish, gold digging nude dancer Erica - is frequently hilarious, embarrasingly well observed, and always diverting, ultimately this is an entertainment. Such a cartoon is Biglia, that it is hard to be anything other than amused by his sufferings, or those of Flora, drawn reluctantly into his web thanks to the inhibition-lowering effects of MDMA.

But in his other narrative thread, Ammaniti has created one of the great adoloscent characters in literature. I challenge anyone who had a less than perfect childhood - and that's most of us - not to relate strongly to Pietro Moroni. Pietro, 12 years old but small for his age, struggles with a dysfunctional family dominated by an abusive alcoholic father and with bullying and victimisation from the local toughs. His only salvation comes from being the best friend and soulmate of Gloria, the most beautiful and feisty girl in town. But as Pietro hits adolescence that plank is also becoming shaky, as friendship starts to turn into something else, with all the uncertainties and fears that brings.

Pietro is swept along on a wave of events that he has no way of controlling, let down by all the adults in his life, only able to turn to the always supportive, but not always wise, Gloria. Ultimately, as his narrative crosses paths with that of Biglia, he takes a series of unpredictable and shocking actions to take control of his life.

A book that can be hilarious, picaresque, and profound simultaneously is a rare thing indeed - and Pietro and Gloria's story in particular will stay with you for a long time. And for anyone who remembers the fear, pain, occasional rapture and general heightening of the senses of your first love / first crush, this book will stir up feelings and memories you've long forgotten.

Deliberately or not, Ammaniti has left plenty of room for a sequel and personally I hope he writes it. But for now, I heartily recommend this book to anyone with a heart.

Heat in a small town

Niccolo Ammaniti's "new" book, "I'll Steal You Away" is a melange of small but very passionate vignettes concerning a cross section of people in Ischiano Scalo, an Italian Peyton Place. His protagonists are one Pietro Moroni, an uncertain pre-teen who carries the responsibility of the world on his shoulders and Graziano Biglia, a forty-something ne'er-do-well. Their lives are largely connected with Flora Palmieri, a local school teacher on whom Pietro seeks revenge for failing him at school and with whom Graziano has a whirlwind courtship lasting one night.

I'll Steal You Away" is "new" in the sense that it was written before his wonderful 2003 book, "I'm Not Scared" (after which a gratifying movie was made) and translated by Jonathan Hunt (no relation to me) earlier this year. Ammaniti's attention to detail and his often graphic descriptions of characters in sensual scenes are in abundance in "I'll Steal You Away". He knows how to tell a story. However, this earlier book suffers from being too long where "I'm Not Scared" was of an apt length. While one of the aims of the book is to transfer a sense of worth and power to Pietro from Graziano during an encounter where the youngster is being attacked by his peers and Graziano comes to Pietro's aid, it nonetheless takes almost the entire length of the book to get to that point.

Hunt's very British translation makes for a fun sidelight (at least for American readers!) but Ammaniti shines in the force of his narrative delivery. It's a good book but some editing would have made "I'll Steal You Away" an even better one.

Not his best, but with good bits

Early (1999) third novel by Niccolò Ammaniti (NA), who won great praise for his second, `I'm not Afraid', which was made into an awards-winning movie. This reader has read (only) five of NA's books and finds this creation his least. Why? NA's second novel about a 9-year old showed him to be a great writer about the mindset of growing-up children. He may not have wanted to write another such book that would be criticized as a repetition, sequel, or whatever. So, in this book Pietro (12), unhappy at home and bullied at school, is one of a few believable characters of a farce. His best friend is privileged Gloria, too cute for words. NA joins him precariously with a co-star, Graziano Biglia (44), a carefree playboy, musician, globetrotter, erotic champion, who when forced to choose, always makes the wrong decision. Pietro and Graziano meet briefly, late in the novel... Why? Because they hail from the same coastal village NW of Rome.
The first half of this novel is full of bad jokes, superlatives, clichés, prejudices, crude language and ugly violence. And references to Italian sing-along's, TV programs and -stars and English-language music and movies. Throughout the novel, the texts written in italics are a bonus to readers: they contain the thoughts of the main characters when under great pressure, in mortal fear.
Only after 250 pp a dramatic structure becomes evident. By then many readers may have given up. Persistent readers are rewarded by a satisfactory and dramatic ending. In an interview on internet, the author expressed his joy and satisfaction about writing this book. But he doubted that it could become a movie...
Overlong and full of bad taste, but altogether, a brilliant portrayal of a quiet child somehow driven to commit crimes. With 100-150 pp less, it would have been a better book.

Not a Scam

There is bad information from a previous reviewer. This is NOT the book being touted by WSD. Do not buy this book, thinking it's the one with the "hidden plan for wealth", and buy low sell high investing secrets. That's a different book.

This book is best described by the other reviewers here. It's a great book on finance, easy to understand.

I first bought this years ago. There is a reason Dick Levin has a following. Some of the prices are dated, but the concepts are timeless. Read it and profit. NOTE: There is another edition of the exact same book for MUCH less: Buy Low, Sell High, Collect Early & Pay Late : The Manager's Guide to Financial Survival

Dr. Levin is the guru of simplifying business concepts

I have read this book, plus I had Dr. Levin as a professor in the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a great teacher and his book's style and way of conveying business concepts was equally satisfying. This is not a book for the scholar, rather it is a very good book for those that want a quick, but substantive way to grasp the basics of everyday business. The title also belies Dr. Levin's laid back and easy-going style and sense of humor. He teaches and writes using sometimes folksy, but always perceptive stories and examples of the concepts and points he is trying to convey. If you want to get the basics of how a business operates, how cash flow works and why it is important, why "buying low and selling high" are not only simple concepts but critical guidelines for any business, of any size or scale or complexity . . . then Dr. Levin's book is for you.

Alex Libby Alex Libby has a background in IT support. He has been involved in supporting end users for almost 20 years in a variety of different environments; a recent change in role now sees Alex working as an MVT test developer for a global distributor based in the UK. Although Alex gets to play with different technologies in his day job, his first true love has always been with the open source movement, and in particular experimenting with CSS/CSS3, jQuery, and HTML5. Where's the rest of the book?

As a web developer, I'm always looking for new ideas and better ways of implementing page elements and user experience features. Thus, my decision to check-out this book.

Unfortunately, "Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3 Essentials", left me disappointed and unsatisfied in this regard. It's clear the authors have a good comprehension of RWD knowledge and know-how but their lack of expanded coverage on the discussed topics coupled with many missing topics makes the book useful for only a small subset of RWD development.

The good...
* The book mainly shines on the coverage of media related web design, both for desktop and mobile. The information on video, pictures, and images is critical for sites where the conveyance of such elements is a large part of site pages. However, this coverage could have been condensed to a single chapter.
* There is also some good, albeit incomplete, coverage of grid and flexbox layouts as well as some examples of page content layout shifts (aka the responsiveness) for different screen sizes and orientations.

The not so good...
* The book is extremely light on actual examples WITH supporting code. Chapter 4, Exploring [CSS] Media Queries, was the least offensive in this regard but I still felt it lacked in cohesiveness. At a minimum, I would have liked to have seen more CSS with supporting screenshots demonstrating topics in action. Taking this a step further, I would have liked to have seen more coverage of element repositioning with diffferent screen sizes especially those using flexbox and index.
* There is some repetitive reuse of figures, especially in regards to break points.
* The use of the term media takes on different meanings throughout the book and the shifting usage can be a distraction.
* I think the book would have been much more useful if they had developed as an example a typical mobile page with standard elements including a hamburger menu, logo and image usage in a confined space, tagline rework or removal on page shrinkage, and floating side menu to access lists or submenus. (I mention the latter because I often find that main content gets shifted so far down the page the user becomes exhausted from constantly scrolling it into view, and then even more infuriated by having to scroll back-up to access a menu or submenu.) In this way, the chapters would have been more cohesive (Chapter 4 would need to be moved forward) and I think examples would have become more natural.

Other coverage that would have made the book a gem, especially for new comers, includes: the use of floating elements for quick page navigation (esp. return to top), affixing the top menu coupled with my other favorite feature, shrink the header on page scroll, and targeting inputs (buttons, radio's, checkbox's) for mobile usage. (I think the latter is often overlooked the most in technical prose. I prefer to completely restyle checkbox's, radio's and even select's for mobile usage. Most users find clicking a stock checkbox input an absolute nuisance on a mobile display (and to an extent on a desktop).) There is also no mention of standards, such as minimum button size (at least 37px or increasing the active touch area), enlarging text size or libraries such as Bootstrap.

In short, I think if the authors were to extend the material on the current topics, cut away some of the fluff and add coverage of other RWD topics, the book would reach a wider audience and be more useful as a reference. Who knows, maybe I should do some book writing of my own.

Walsh’s postings take readers to Buenos Aires (where “revolutionary” means the angry poor invading the presidential palace, not a really small phone that’s also a camera) and across the sub-Saharan savannah (like riding across a piece of toast with a mouthful of crackers); they feature Walsh being mistaken for a bum in New York, bashed by deadly tequila in Mexico, contracting typhoid in a dilapidated Bolivian hotel, biking “The Most Beautiful Road in the World” in Peru, being kidnapped in Kenya and finding downtown Soweto about as threatening as Stockport. Walsh's writing style is uniquely entertaining and he wastes no time sucking you in. The entire journey is a roller coaster ride of improbable food fortune layered with streaks of the worst life has to offer. What really hooked me, though, was getting to experience the story through someone that is my polar opposite. Where I would take the practical and carefully chosen approach, Walsh charges ahead, guns blazing with the mindset of a man who has nothign to lose and everything to gain. This book screams that sometimes it's better to let life happen to you, than the other way around. Often, a little luck will carry you farther than a lot of planning. The world through the eyes of Dan Walsh is never less than Technicolor, and always uninhibited, rebellious and on the edge. Not since the days of Ted Simon’s Jupiter’s Travels has one man embarked on such a crazed bike trek around the world.

About the Author

In 2005 motorcycle journalist Dan Walsh departed Peterborough, UK, on a 650 BMW and headed for South America to become a biking drifter, pilgrim, and latter-day heir to Ted Simon. His legendary Bike Magazine columns about his travel experiences – lyrical, edgy, fraught with danger, despair and surreal highs and lows – have earned him a cult following and he has been labeled “the savior of motorcycle writing.” Dan still contributes to the UK’s Bike Magazine, as well as Motorcyclist in the US, and is still out on the road. This is his first book.

Endless... spew

When the US version of this book included the subtitle, A Very Messy Motorcycle Journal.... they were right.

The first few pages will tell you all you need to know about the writer's admitted lack of expertise and common sense. There is " ...burst-mattress XT600 dirt bike..." (see that license plate? the XT is by definition and manufacturer legal description not a dirt bike). Actually the book's marketing folks are not in the running for accuracy either, where they proclaim "Dan Walsh rode out of London on a Yamaha XT Desert Rat.." forgetting all the while to hire the fact-checker who might have told them that there is no such model, except in their imaginings.

And perhaps more revealingly, Walsh wonders aloud "... how fast you have to move to outrun stupidity." For those still wondering, Walsh did not even attempt to outrun stupidity. He merely distilled it and carried it, in industrial strength and volume, wherever he went. It's best to get these acknowledgments out in the open, and early on. Oh, yes, and remember that this book is a rehash of mostly previously published material. Though there is occasionally amusing and even creative writing, this book features a few too many repetitions of phrases that weren't particularly funny the first ten times, and attempts at some foreign phrases that are, well, he got the word order backwards.

Though Walsh's book is by no means in the same league as Chatwin's "In Patagonia," each has its own version of purely volitional messiness. Chatwin was a bit free and loose with certain of his facts, but nevertheless wrote a fine book that was well regarded even if the cognoscenti were well aware of his occasional tendency to invent. Of course, most readers take the factoids of In Patagonia as if they were true. Likewise, the uncritical folks -- those seeking mere entertainment -- will probably accept some of Walsh's representations as truthful. As an expounder of fact, Walsh is something of a failure; as a teller of tales, however, he is a bit of a qualified winner. He has his moments of lucidity. His description of the train hitting the van somewhere in central Africa will stay with you long after you've given the book to someone else.

We have the distinct impression that author Walsh was drunk most of the time during his travels, or just recovering from a binge, or about to fall over in front of another bar where he would spend several weeks forgetting where he left his bike. In true bad-biker form, he reveals his pride in abusing the women in his life. So this just might be your kind of book.

It is difficult to see how any responsible adult reviewer could compare Walsh to the likes of writers of the genre like Ted Simon or Bruce Chatwin. What Walsh writes seems to be an exercise in fingerpainting with his own spew and filth, in a predictably colourful manner. His disdain for fellow travelers with differing styles, better judgment, clean clothes, tendencies toward sobriety and decent health, moderate mechanical ability, and greater competence is rather clear. Walsh's selection of venues and vignettes reminds us of a man who glides through a sewer in a glass-bottomed boat. Some find that charming.

For those expecting examples of Walsh's dubious scholarship, here is one: we see that he dismisses Chile as too right-wing, though he only briefly and superficially passed through a small part of the country, forgetting that the right-wing government left the country nearly twenty years before he got there. This observation (about the "too right-wing government") is presumably because he notes that drivers actually vote in national elections, stop at traffic lights, carry insurance, and behave in a manner almost consistent with those of the civilized nations. Or perhaps because the policies of the oh so terrible former administration resulted in something like 70 percent of Chileans owning their own homes? (not squalid enough for ya, Mr. Walsh?)

In his diatribe against "right-wing" Chile, Walsh was evidently blissfully (drunkenly?) unaware that both the Chilean government and the Presidenta elected in 2006 were distinctly socialist (the Presidenta herself was trained in communist East Germany, belongs to the same political party as the Marxist Allende, and the Chilean president before her was also a supporter of the earlier Marxist regime -- and this is a country that is too right-wing for Mister Walsh?). Never mind that a degree of Western-style economic success has provided Chileans with decent food and housing and drinking water, modern public health care and relatively safe working conditions, along with roadways better than those in Colorado. No, Walsh finds the country lacking in stereotypical Latin American squalor and thus unworthy of his attentions. In describing Chile's government and society, Walsh was well behind the times, evidently basing his bashing on preconceived notions and the observations of others writing about conditions that existed many years earlier. Note to publishers: unbiased scholarship, objectivity, good grammar, historical accuracy, and sober writing are not inconsistent with the normal travel genre.

Writer Walsh certainly gives hooligan motorcycle riders a bad name. He partially redeems himself by posing as the admitted prototype of the bad example. But there will always be that one clown in any population who wallows in ordure, wears silly rags on his head, and goes about a part of his life pretending to be some sort of latter-day pirate. Those fellows exist for distant viewing and our amusement, or even as a warning, but certainly not for serious emulation by responsible adults.

There is a certain subclass of "adventure" that is simply the inability to plan and execute a task intelligently, coherently, and competently. And so there should be a corresponding category of travel books dedicated to those writers best characterized by unwaveringly sloppy alcoholism, erroneous assumptions, abysmally poor preparation, flawed research, abuse of one's fellows, deliberately unhealthy pursuits, dubious journalistic skills, gratuitously foul language, and the endless horizons.... of bad judgment.

Walsh Fans Beware: This Is Just The U.S. Release of "These Are The Days"

If you read Dan Walsh's "These Are The Days That Must Happen To You" you read this book. This is just the U.S. release re-titled "Endless Horizon" for some reason. I really wish Amazon had mentioned that someplace in the description. We got excited about the release of "Endless Horizon" thinking it was a second volume in a Walsh series (and that's why the cover art was the same). It is not a new book. It's the same book, different title. Now I have to go through the hassle of returning it.

This book, while not a literary masterpiece, was a fun read. Although his MO throughout the piece was constant (ride, drink, chase women, hangover, ride, repeat) if you read carefully you learn the book is more about the writer than the journey. The writing changes with his mentality, from exuberance to depression. If you're judgmental about the character of the writer you won't like this book. He's more of an anti-hero. Deeply flawed with his soul on his sleeve. He readily admits this and asks no forgiveness. I kinda like him.

Take it for what it is; a 'stream-of-consciousness' book about a guy and his war with himself.
