About the Author
Joseph J. Martocchio is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor in the School of Labor and Employment Relations, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Master's degree and PhD in human resource management from Michigan State University 's School of Labor and Industrial Relations. Professor Martocchio's research and teaching interests include employee compensation, employee benefits, and the influence of generational diversity on preferences for employee benefits. He has researched extensively, placing him in the top 5 percent of the most productive researchers published in premier applied psychology journals for the 1990s, according to a survey conducted by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). Martocchio is a fellow of SIOP and the American Psychological Association and a fellow of the Employee Benefits Research Institute. He is the co-editor of the annual research series Research in Personnel and Human Resources Management (Emerald Insight Publishing). Martocchio is the author of a textbook titled Strategic Compensation: A Human Resource Management Approach (Pearson Education).

If I owned just one book, this would be it

This book has to rate as one of the most beautiful I have ever read. John Stevens does a masterly job of turning into English the original Japanese poetry. Ryokan's compassion and simplicity are retained, along with his penetrative insight into the human condition.

Can't put it down

This is a fantastic book of Ryokan poems that is hard to put down. These poems have a feeling to them of coming from a true Master of the Buddha's teachings. The translator helps by staying away from analyis and interpretation and lets Ryokan speak for himself to us through the words. You feel his joy and his sadness as well as his love of solitary forest life and meditation. There is nothing but a wonderful little book of Ryokan translations that lovers of Zen or Zen poetry will turn to again and again.

An excellent antidote

Kondratiev's name may be Russian, but his heart is Celtic for sure based on this text. It's a wonderful antidote to the nonsense being perpetuated by poseurs such as McCoy, Stepanich, and Monroe. He encourages the reader to actually understand the Celts as they were and are as part of their spiritual and cultural growth, and his research and clarity of understanding shines through on every page. It's useable by Pagans and Christians alike, making it even stronger. This may be the first book targeting Celtic Pagans that I've seen which has a recommend from a professor of Irish folklore (Daithi O hOgain at University College Dublin), and it's well-deserved.

A rare treasure for seekers on a Celtic path

As I read this book, I felt I had found a rare treasure I had been seeking for a very long time. Alexei Kondratiev has created a textbook of Celtic spirituality and ritual that rings with authenticity and meaning.
It begins with a clear and fascinating description of what is known of the history of the early Celts, including their class of priests and bards, the Druids, and what is understood of their culture. The author makes plain how much is not known about these people, who, until long after the early flowering of their culture, left almost no written records; yet, based on later writings, archaological evidence, and a deep study of the six surviving Celtic languages and the people who speak them, he manages to elucidate much about the world view of this ancient culture, focused on the connection and tension between Tribe and Land, the oscillation of all existence between polar opposites, and the Otherworldly influences that shape this world.
Then he lays out an exciting and beautiful pattern of ritual for use by anyone who feels the powerful pull of these ideas; our connection with the natural world, and an affinity for the mystical and enchanting spirituality that still haunts the Celtic psyche in the world today. These rituals, based on the ancient seasonal festivals, the cycles of the natural and agricultural year, and the waxing and waning of the moon, Mr. Kondratiev invests with a depth of meaning, connectedness, and purpose that surpasses anything else I've found.
One thing I love about this book is the very high quality of Mr. Kondratiev's writing, in a field where good writing is amazingly rare. With great clarity and beauty, he reveals his own deep and passionate identification with the Celtic spiritual world, and he lights up an inviting path for seekers who wish to penetrate more deeply into that world.

Good and Bad All Wrapped Into One

Kondratiev's work The Apple Branch is well worth reading for many reasons. Let me say that from the beginning, because I did like this book, but it has some big problems too. It was rather difficult for me to rate this book because certain sections deserve 5 stars, and other areas and points emphasized in the book really only get a 2. Likewise, portions of the book really deserve more than 5 stars, and other aspects of the book drop off the meter and don't even deserve a 1. With that said my comments are these. On the upside, read Chapter One, the Tale of the Celts, because it really is excellent. It is historically accurate, well-researched, and lacks the typically over-romanticized nonsense that so many Celtic books today seem plauged by. I think he depicts these Celtic cultural evolutions in a balanced light, from the imbalanced conquest-minded Celtic warriors, to the imperialism of Rome, to some Gaulish tribes aligning with Rome, and others fighting valiantly against it. Kondratiev also does not commit the neo-Celtic fantasy that all Celts were unified, or all somehow upset and overturned by the arrival of Christianity. He makes a convincing arguement as to the survival of Celtic consciousness within Christian tradition and mysticism of today. Something about the way Kondratiev writes in this section on history, and when he gets specific about traditions themselves, really brings the full scope of Celtic history alive. The downside of the book is the absurdity I found in the author's thesis on linguistic emphasis for cultural and spiritual experience or relevance. No one practicing Celtic spirituality or involved with their Celtic culture would deny the value or importance of learning (or learning about) the native tongue of one's ancestors and culture, but Kondratiev makes the suggestion that WITHOUT learning a Celtic language that one cannot truly claim to be involved with Celtic spirituality or Celtic culture. This is, of course, ridiculous. It's like saying one must learn Hebrew to becoming a practicing Christian, or Aramaic to be able to think like a Christian. In similar fashion, it is like saying that one must learn Japanese to master Karate, Aikido, or to experience the deep spiritual wellsprings from practicing Chanoyu, the Way of Tea--things that even the Japanese will say are guided by a larger indefinable spirit behind all things that doesn't speak Japanese. When this author settles in on something, such as Irish or Welsh cosmology, and really dives deep, he is excellent in his treatment of the subject, but all too often he bubbles back up into the domain of the silly--"let's create a pan-Celtic movement where at our rituals we blend Anglo-Saxon Wicca with Celtic ritual and try to speak Welsh, Irish, and Breton all in the same ritual." There is a great deal of value in the book. Read it. But be prepared for the shifting thesis of the book, and the inability of the author to acknowledge spiritual/transpersonal/mystical realities that exist beyond, before, and outside of the domain of linguistics. The parts that are good are GREAT. The parts putting forth a "Path of Celtic Ritual" are strangely schizophrenic, presenting a fundamentalist leaning regarding language (note: most Irish, Welsh, and Scots people are not fluent in our languages, yet we do work with the spirits of place in the lands where we live), while taking rather bizarre and typically neo-Celtic liberties with ideas of a pan-Celtic spiritual movement. The creation of such a phenomenon on a spiritual level is, ironically, very un-Celtic.

The SWOT analysis, however, pursues an integrated approach including key company and environmental variables. The objective is the confrontation of the company's internal strengths and its weaknesses as well as company-external business opportunities and risks in order to generate possible strategic options. The SWOT analysis particularly supports a combined and integrated approach of the current company situation enabling well-balanced and comprehensive decisions. One main benefit is thus the reduction of complexity through the integrated approach, leaving the key factors and strategies as analytical residue. In practice, the SWOT method is a well established tool to analyze business units in larger companies and smaller start-ups in particular during their launch. The SWOT analysis though reveals limited possibilities when analyzing all business units of large companies. For this task other, more holistic, approaches as the share-holder-value concept or the portfolio analysis are appropriate. However, this large field of tools will not be treated in this assignment. The SWOT analysis is though, despite its disadvantages, one of the most important instruments for the internal analysis of a company's situation that - in every case - delivers a pretty comprehensive and resilient foundation for further entrepreneurial decisions and strategic planning.

On second thought

I wrote a first review, and the author hunted down my email address and emailed my differential equations teacher. In the email, he said, I should wait until I finished the course until I reviewed his book. I realized how wrong I was to shoot my mouth off. I should have been more sagacious and patient in order to tell the truth.

First the good: I only spent 40 bucks on this book and should be able to get my money back. And the author spent tons of time designing little computer cartoons because there's nothing I like better than being distracted by a funny cartoon.

The bad: If you don't have ADD before you pick up this book, you will after. Printed on wonderfully shiny paper, with multicolored graphs, headers, footers, pictures, and once in awhile even something haveing to do with differential equations, this book is next to impossible focus on. That's part of the reason some students like this book. They don't have to read. They can just look at the pictures then ask someone else for help.

Do you want to learn about differential equations? Well, if you buy this book, you might. If you pair this book up with another book that explains why this stuff makes sense. And then read only that book. Good understanding of the more difficult problems come from a good foundation. This book spends 2 chapters on the basics. But boy, you want to graph stuff, here's your chance. (You can even have an assignment to graph a kitten out of differential equations, i mean man, that's worth a star right there.) The author succumbs to greedius maximus, wherein he crams as much crap into a book to sell as many copies as possible, instead of focusing on one thing and doing it well. Because no one really needs more than 20 pages to describe all of second order differential equations. The computer can do all that for you.

Oh, and if you want to learn how to solve differential equations for something like physics class, good luck. You have two choices in this book, you can either guess and make up your own way of doing things, or you can use the cookbook approach. You won't really know why you want to take the exponential, but that doesn't matter because you just need a grade. So you follow the clever boxed text that says do this, this, than this. And voila, you have an answer. And to anyone who says, well, we have to graph most differential equations because we can't solve them, i say, wonderful? So, I can just move onto stuff no one understands and expect to make sense of it by not understanding the equations we do know how to solve.

And since I need to plug Dover to make my 20 dollar commission, buy Morris Tenenbaum's Ordinary Differential Equations book. It's not fancy, but it's well written and 800 pages long. Which is funny, because Borrelli's book is 790 pages long and tries to cover ODE's, PDE's and Linear Algebra. Telling detail? I think so. ( I bet you could even buy a couple of awesome Dover books on PDE's and Linear Algebra and still undercut the 115 dollar selling price by about 3/4. )

Confusing, Disorganized, Too Little Examples

A terrible book to learn DEs from. Just finished a course using it, they expect you to know how to solve problems with poor examples or any examples at all. This book expects you to figure everything out on your own. Also, it is useless to study from, as there are only 1 or 2 questions that actually have answers in the back of the book. It is simply cryptic, and one has to waste more time than is really neccesary to be able to figure it out. Buy another book.

A good up-to-date introduction to Differential Equations

This text teaches Differential Equations using the models and tools that both mathematicians and engineers use. It uses the modeling process to show how the DEs are developed. It uses numerous examples showing how to understand a DEs behavior using numerical solvers as well as standard analytical techniques and (when they exist) solution formulas.
Because it doesn't use a cookbook approach to solving DEs, it isn't restricted to just those DEs for which there is a standard solution method. Since it can deal with this wider variety of DEs, it can introduce more interesting models (e.g., the autocatylator) which it would otherwise ignore. The graphs used to illustrate these models are easy to understand, incredibly detailed, and very pretty.
This book gives a very complete introduction to Differential Equations and to the models that they describe.

A new, valuable introduction to Int'L Law

The 7th edition of this classic among student textbooks builds upon the clarity and stile Michael Akehurst was famous for, and gives an up to date introduction to International Law. The author, Peter Malanczuk, Professor of International Law at the University of Amsterdam, included systematic references which will enable the reader to begin a journey into the advanced subjects of the Law - if he/she so wishes. Malanczuks perspective is broad and serves the needs both of students in International Law and in International Relations.

A very good international law book

"Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law" by Peter Malanczuk is one of the best books on International Law for scholars and students of law, now a days. The text was re-written by Professor Peter Malanczuk (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) with aditional information based on the new developments like International Environmental Law or International Economic Law.
Certainly the basics of the book correspond to older editions, but new chapters make it a clear example of an "International Law" book than a modest "Introduction".
The text is well written and the concepts are in order. However, definitions about important international legal institutions were missed, for example, International Environmental Law, Custom, etc. These and other definitions are important for students in order to have clarity on the institutions and the subject.
The book, however, is well structured, keeping the interest of the reader on the topics of International Law and giving information on every topic to search further on in other sources.
I hope that the book will have translation to other languages.

Time for an 8th Edition?

Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law provides a sound basis for understanding the United Nations, treaties, and international law. The only drawback to the book is that the material is becoming somewaht dated with its 1997 copyright.

The book has gone through a number of reprints in between 1998 and 2004 leading me to suggest a 8th edition for 2006. The book

provided an academic premier for a course in Space Law. I enjoyed the Latin legal terms spread throughout the text. I do recommend that the reader have some prior knowledge of the law to more fully appreciate the text.
