History that most Americans have never heard before!
By Mamabear Cherei
I loved this story! Zheng He was one of the most famous Generals AND Admirals in China's long history! The book begins in his childhood and follows him through much of his life. The author truly brought this man to life! I loved how the story flows so easily. One actually learns quite a bit about political and geographical warfare.
As a very young child, his city was attacked.. and his father chose to fight rather than give up to the invaders. The attacking General liked the spirit of Zheng He and took him as his adopted son. Unfortunately.. the General was also hated by the Emperor of China.. who demanded that the boy stay with him.. as a eunuch.
The story follows Zheng He's life behind the walls of the Forbidden City.. to back out amongst the military. Where he was declared a General at an extremely young age. Then.. to get rid of him.. made the Admiral of a defunct Navy. That literally only had one old boat.. and one sailor! From this.. he created a Navy that was feared by all.
A very good tale! One that I'd highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about ancient China or of military tactics.

Excellent Historic Novel
By J. Reich
Zheng He comes alive in the words of this historic novel. The book held my interest from beginning to end. The writing is rich with feeling for the locations and era. Zheng He though unknown to me before reading this book must have been an extraordinary individual living a fascinating life. There is need for further proof reading of the text but this did not detract from the book.

Interesting!
By George Lu
This was a gripping book - exciting, informative, tragic. It made you feel as if you were in China in 1400-1432. I could really feel for the hero of the book, Zheng He, and for the heroism, success and tragedy of his life. But after reading the book one question remains for me - why did the Emperor of China make the decision for the Chinese to withdraw from the seas during Zheng He's seventh voyage? This book brings to life the drama of that enigmatic question.
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
