I loved this book! The author has really brought to life the fascinating personalities of great pianists of the past and created a contemporary context for their advice. Many in-depth areas of RAC tuning are explored that help the DBA reveal hidden performance trends within even the most complex RAC database.

√ Well-Written & Great Selection of Ideas for Tuning

When reading ORACLE RAC PERFORMANCE TUNING, don't be too quick to quibble because the author is suggesting a method that you don't use. Try to be open to other ideas. Here's what I mean: DBAs are a smart, but tough lot of characters. If you get 10 DBAs reading a book on performance tuning, each of the 10 will be jumping up and down shouting, "That's not how I would do it," or "That's not what Tom Kyte says," etc. Instead, look for ideas that are something new--some new technique that you haven't seen before. By having this attitude, I was able to glean some really great ideas--things that honestly I had not thought of. For example, page 93 has a script to find what object is being sent back and forth the most between nodes. Honestly, I never thought of looking at the object names. That's just one example. The chapters on benchmarking tools is pretty much new territory for me.

♦ There is a really great thing in this book, that I haven't seen in other technical books. Chapter 14 is entitled, "Book Summary," where Brian gives the essential points in the book. This is a GREAT idea. In fact, I think readers should actually read this part first. I bet the author used Chapter 14 as the outline for writing the book. (Am I right, Brian?) The only nit I have here, is that I wish the author would have included the chapter reference for each major point.

♦ The author, Brian Peasland, makes an excellent point in the "Book Summary" section: "Tune the system as if it were a single-instance database. All of the single-instance tuning techniques still apply to Oracle RAC. An application that will not scale with a single-instance Oracle database will not scale with Oracle RAC." (I would add that if it doesn't scale on a single instance, it will likely be much worse with RAC.) This is a great insight--I came to the same conclusion as Brian. Of course, our scripts will be a little different, but the tuning concepts are the same.

♦ On the overall quality of the book: To design and produce a quality book on an extensive topic is not a simple task--especially a book of this magnitude. Let's face it, most techies are TERRIBLE at writing and presenting. It's such a pleasure to read a book that is clearly written and thoughtful. The author has clearly spent an ENORMOUS amount of time researching scripts, wait events, concepts, etc. I was very impressed with the quality of the work. Scripts nicely formatted, concepts clearly explained, etc. Again, a really nice job for both writer and editor.

♦ In addition, someone (the editor, Don Burleson, I think) has spent a lot of time getting the design of this book right. The physical formatting of the book is excellent--good font size, good margins, clear and easy to read. If you remember some of the very early Rampant Press books, you are in for a pleasant surprise. As another example of the quality of this book, I note the cover design. Again, someone (Janet Burleson, cover designer) has spent a TON of time producing a quality book. The end product clearly reflects a lot of hard work--books like this do not just happen by accident.

♦ There are a huge number of technical ideas--I recommend skipping around to the topics that interest you. I liked especially the chapters talking about the interconnect, and various scripts to spot interconnect problems. In addition, I quickly found one topic that really startled me, because I haven't seen it documented this thoroughly before. I mean, "Bloom Filters" on page 202. Brian illustrates this concept nicely. This is important to me because we had encountered bugs related to this feature, but none of us DBAs knew what in the world the "Bloom Filter" meant.

√ All in all, ORACLE RAC PERFORMANCE TUNING is an outstanding accomplishment. Tons of great ideas in every chapter, clearly explained, with lots of nice charts and diagrams. I am sure I will be using this book as a reference for a long time. I am recommending to my boss that she get copies for our group. Highly Recommend!

I wish he had written this ten years ago

This book gives you what it says on the cover: Oracle RAC Performance Tuning. You will not, for example, find much detail of using Flex Clusters (though he does de-bunk one of the common myths) nor any real mention of policy management, ACFS, or QoS. Perhaps Brian will cover them in his next book. No problem - what you will find is four hundred pages about performance tuning, and they are all worth reading. The author follows similar techniques to those I use, and formalizes them wonderfully. The general methodology is that you cannot tune anything unless you understand it. So most of the book is about how to work out what the hardware, the operating system, and Oracle, are doing; how they are doing it; and why. Understand all that, and the tuning is obvious.
The content will be useful for all DBAs, though the level of assumed knowledge is such that this is not for absolute beginners. You do need to be familiar with SQL, PL/SQL, and DB admin; you need to know how to read an execution plan. To put it in Oracle Uni terms, ideally you need to be at OCP level and studying for the OCM and the RAC Specialization. The material goes far beyond what Oracle Uni teaches for those qualifications. Those not yet so familiar with RAC will appreciate the way in which each chapter begins with an exposition of the architectural concept, and those of us who think we know it all will learn from the detail. For example, chapter two starts with a nice description of how the global cache service and global enqueue service work, and then WHAM! A bunch of scripts that show how to track exactly which blocks are being transferred across the interconnect when you select a particular row. The result is a nice combination of architectural detail with plenty of what one might call "tips and tricks". There are chapters on tuning specific elements of a GI environment that are very practical: the interconnect; storage; memory; parallel processing. The chapter "RAC Support Tools" is, for me, the highlight in this category. Other chapters are more theoretical: cache fusion; wait events; AWR, ADDM, ASH.
I wish he had written this ten years ago, it would have saved me (and my clients) incalculable hours. I don't agree with everything he says - but that doesn't mean that he is wrong, it just means that I have to do some more research. Whatever your skill level, you will learn from this book. I've seen RAC since release 9.x, and parallel server before that. Even so, Brian has taught me a lot.

Tuning RAC is like tuning regular Oracle (with just a few extra considerations)

Disclaimer: I was a bit surprised when the author whom I have encountered on the Oracle support and OTN forums asked me to review his book since we have never meet in person and have not always agree in our postings. Nevertheless, I am very glad I said yes because this is a good book. I say this based on my experience having worked with every major release of Oracle since version 6 up to 11.2. This is a good book because I believe the reader will find this book useful. Brian does not waste time covering how to install and create RAC databases, but instead sticks to the intent of the title: tuning. From his early statement that for the most part tuning RAC is the same as tuning non-RAC he covers the range of tuning topics with emphasis on how the feature is affected by or works when RAC is in use. For example he demonstrates why nocache sequences are not a good idea in normal Oracle and why this option can be a disaster when used with RAC. Naturally he covers all the RAC specific topics like the GRD, GCS, and the interconnect. Brian also includes coverage with examples of the output from a slew of free optional Oracle provided tools that can monitor the OS and pull statistics out of Oracle such as oswatcher, oratop, and RAC Diag. He includes references to the Oracle support notes on each tool which in turn provide the download url’s. The book has numerous useful scripts for looking at RAC related activity. I believe this book is worth consideration.

Crafty ideas.....

Ellen Dugan holds `Master Gardener' status through the University of Missouri and according to her bio has many years of nursery and gardening experience. She is also clairvoyant and a witch with a sense of humor. As she is raising three teenagers all these skills are useful.
Dugan's book is a "user-friendly" introduction and guide to witchcraft. GARDEN WITCHERY is also a great resource for mothers and aunts and anyone else interested in fun-filled ideas for creating special gardens, places for divination and spell casting, Sabat holiday decor, and other pagan treats that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Many of her suggestions, such as dying Easter Eggs with red cabbage leaves, can be found elsewhere, but Dugan is a practical witch and suggests it is not un-witchlike to buy Easter Egg dye. She uses natural materials at hand for many of her projects, but she recommends craft stores and yard sales as great places to stock up on supplies such as orange lights for Samhain or plastic colored eggs for Ostara.
Dugan not only provides the instructions for making and using many scented items, she includes some suggestions for growing the ingredients-although this is not a gardening book per se. I grow many of the herbs she recommends, and can testify it isn't hard to maintain pots of lavender, scented geraniums, and other plants on a patio, porch, or balcony-as long as you have adequate sun and remember to water them occasionally. And, it is extremely rewarding to make sachets and other scented items with plant material you grew yourself. If you intend to use Dugan's recipes and want to grow your own ingredients, however, buy a good gardening book such as Rodale's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS which includes detailed information about the cultivation and uses of herbs (as well as how to grow them organically AND when they are noxious!!).
Although Dugan has many nifty ideas about gardening, the one concern I have concerning her advice is her recommended use of pesticides. This is quite ironic as she lists "eagle watching" as a fall pastime her family enjoys. If you can skip the poisons (some witches do use them) and stick to her other suggestions, this is a nifty source for many child-centered or adult "fun" activities.

This book will hold me over till Spring!!

When I recieved my copy of Ellen Dugans Garden Witchery, I was impressed because it was so beautiful, as I thumbed through it, I couldn`t put it on the shelf. After reading it, I can tell you not only is this a lovely book, but this little gem is just full of lots of information on plants, flowers, magickal correspondences, and specialty gardens for the magickal practitioner. She inspires the reader to create a sacred space close to nature and commune with the spirits of magickal plants. This is getting back to why many people practice nature religions like Wicca and other forms of Paganism, reverence for the earth and nature!
This book was a very refreshing escape from all the 101 books out there, although, I could see it being enjoyed by Witches and non Witches alike. All that is required is a love of nature, and an open mind. It seamlessly combines practical gardening informtion with magickal advice on when to plant, gardening with the cycles of the earth and moon, how to invite blessings into the garden, and more. Ellen Dugans warm and friendly writing style makes this book a joy to read and I even found myself snickering out loud at points. Mrs. Dugan even shares with us information about the language of flowers that she unearthed in a book from 1845! It is a treasure trove of Natural Magick, including practical spells, and Garden Witch crafts like dream pillows and charm bags.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Magick or gardening. I am now planning new additions to my gardens for the spring based on suggestions in Garden Witchery.

Good Book but not for experienced gardeners

Ellen Dugan has written a very entertaining book, but I wouldn't suggest it as something to garden by. She leaves out some very important information on the plants she suggests. An example would be her recommendations for shade gardening, while the plants she list will indeed grow in shade, she neglects to mention the soil conditions required for those plants. Shaded areas can vary from bone dry to boggy and if you plant a fern or cardinal flower in a bone dry area failure is certain unless you plan to water constantly to keep the area moist. The other concern is that some of the plants that she recommends are highly invasive, mints (which should always be container grown!!), ivy, morning glories and periwinkle! These plants can over take entire gardens in a short amount of time. Check with your local master gardeners to be sure that these plants aren't listed in the noxious weeds list in your area. If you are going to follow her suggestions make certain that you research the plants that you choose, nothing is more disappointing then buying new plants and then killing them by accident!

At Last!

This book will become a classic... Like other reviewers, I have copies of many of the important works on matrix theory, but, for example- Needed a result on simultaneous diagonalization. Where to find it? In "Introduction to Statistical Pattern Recognition", Fukunaga, or do it from scratch, or... in this text, along with pretty much every other result that I could want. So, I'm buying a copy both for its completeness and organization. It'll be the first stop every time I'm scratching my head over a matrix algebra problem. Thanks to Bernstein for making my life a bit easier.

Where do you find that arcane result ?

Sometimes it is very difficult to find out a matrix theorem that is used in a technical publication.

I have books by Gantmacher, Horn, Meyer (undergraduate), Kunze and Hoffman and Jan Magnus but if you NEED to quickly find a result, open this book. Thousands of matrix theorems and facts.

lacking instructions

An okay book. For those not well-read on subjects like these, you'll pretty much be lost on what to do with this without guidance from a more experienced friend (or the Internet). I guess my issue is more with the title than the content. I think this book might have been better off titled something like 'Demon Summoning References' or just 'Demons.' It just lists out demon names and natures, but simply states to use your preferred method of summoning, which you'll be lost on if you don't know anything about it. Only recommend if you know what you're doing, or if you have reliable instructions to go with it.
