Starr captures the triumphs and tumult of the great agricultural strikes in the Imperial Valley, the San Joaquin Valley, Stockton, and Salinas, identifying the crucial role played by Communist organizers; he also shows how, after some successes, the Communists disbanded their unions on direct orders of the Comintern in 1935. The highpoint of social conflict, however, was 1934, the year of the coastwide maritime strike, and here Starr's narrative talents are at their best, as he brings to life the astonishing general strike that took control of San Francisco, where workers led by charismatic longshoreman Harry Bridges mounted the barricades to stand off National Guardsmen. That same year socialist Upton Sinclair won the Democratic nomination for governor, and he launched his dramatic End Poverty in California (EPIC) campaign. In the end, however, these challenges galvanized the Right in a corporate, legal, and vigilante counterattack that crushed both organized labor and Sinclair. And yet, the Depression also brought out the finest in Californians: state Democrats fought for a local New Deal; California natives helped care for more than a million impoverished migrants through public and private programs; artists movingly documented the impact of the Depression; and an unprecedented program of public works (capped by the Golden Gate Bridge) made the California we know today possible.

The Depression brought a massive influx of hopeful refugees to California from elsewhere in the United States, including 300,000 new agricultural workers--the people of John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. These newcomers worked in the fields and stores for fifteen cents an hour while Hollywood made movies about their lot, Woody Guthrie sang songs about them, and union organizers tried hard to make a labor-based revolution. This fourth volume in California State Librarian Starr's "Americans and the California Dream" series (e.g., Material Dreams: Southern California Through the 1920s, Oxford Univ. Pr., 1990) takes on the Depression, which had a profound impact on California's economy, politics, society, and culture. Starr focuses on personalities such as Upton Sinclair and Harry Bridges and social developments such as migrant farm labor and "Ham and Eggs," which contributed to an already distinct California style and tradition. As he has done before, Starr includes a section on public works, which describes water development projects and the jewel in California's architectural crown, the Golden Gate Bridge. He includes a detailed bibliographic essay. The mix of sound scholarship and contemporary literary expression creates a fascinatingly readable picture of the Golden State in the 1930s. Highly recommended for all libraries with California collections.

Californians, Learn Your State's History

Kevin Starr's continuing work on the history of California since 1850 continues to impress me and fill me with interesting and useful knowledge about the state. Being a resident of the state, it is relatively easy for me to keep following the thread and the meaning of names and locations. I can imagine this would be somewhat more difficult for readers not as familiar with our state. The story of the waterfront strikes in San Francisco and the farming/migrant/labor issues of the 1930s are very compelling and should be easily understood by readers regardless of where they are from. The issues dealing with our water supply and other water management issues as well as those dealing with large public works within the state, can pose a bigger challenge for those readers.
As with his other volumes, Mr. Starr doesn't just give us straight-ahead, factual history. In my view, he is especially good at giving incidental stories about some of the players involved in a way that keeps the reader more interested. Immediately after finishing the book I went to the internet to find out more about people like photographer Dorothea Lange and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. That is what I ask of books like these: that they teach me about things I don't know much about and that they cause me to follow up and learn more about some of the topics within the book.
One learns reading this particular volume that the current quirkiness of California (governor recalls, liberalism, social diversity) is not something that just developed in the 1970s. We had recall movements back in the 1930s as well and some ugliness comes through regarding racism and discrimination in this state that sometimes thinks so highly of itself in that area. It is truly shameful how we discriminated against all migrant workers, whether of color or the Oakies that came to us from the Dust Bowl. The stories of abuse of power by the police and other government entities were very interesting.
I would love to have every Californian---especially our politicians---read Mr. Starr's work. Most history is slow to read, and this is no exception, but the amounts of knowledge one will get about California, make it worth the while.

A terrific summary of California's Labor history

This fourth chapter in Starr's "Americans and the California Dream" is the best yet. I was paticularly interested, in what Starr sees as the States battle between the forces of communism and fascism. The text reads like an account of a some great war, following each battle and skirmish throughout the State. I would recommend this work to anyone who is seriously interested in California or Labor history.

An interesting account of excavations in the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, rich in illustrations

Nordenskiold, a Swede, worked in the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde in 1891, shortly after the Wetherills "discovered" these structures. His excavations were more scientific than theirs (but, of course, not up to current standards). The first 112 pages describe his journey from Durango, Colorado, to the canyons and his work in the cliff dwellings. There are many excellent photographs of the cliff dwellings and sketches of floor plans (many are full page). There are also 24 full page photographic plates of human remains (2 plates) and artifacts. The information on Mesa Verde is followed by 50 pages summarizing information on other archaeological sites, the Hopi ("Moki"), customs of other Pueblo groups (of interest in discussing whether the cliff dwellers were ancestral to these groups), and on the Coronado entrada (including a long reproduction of Castaneda's account). Finally, there is an appendix with a discussion of human crania by a physical anthropologist, with many measurements; I regard this is of little modern interest. Readers should know that the plates with artifacts are grouped by the type of artifact; thus, images of the artifacts found in one site are found on many plates (a legend gives the location at which each artifact was found). This book was originally published in Swedish. The English in our versions is fluent. This review is based on the softcover reprint by the Mesa Verde Museum Association. I have not seen the recent electronic reprint, so do not know whether its text is free of errors and the illustrations are included. For those interested in the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, this book is very well worth reading, even though later archaeological work has updated some of the findings.

Excellent music collection to start with

I've had this book for over five years and the music sounds great. It starts out with relatively easy pieces and you can learn to play nice sounding music from the get-go. Right and Left hand notation is used for problem areas. The author lists the notes/min that you can match with a metronome to get a sense of a goal of how fast to play. Most of the pieces are in the first five frets. If you want to progress beyond five frets, I would hook up with a teacher. All the pieces area good mix of Sor, giuliani, carulli, carcassi, etc.

Excellent collection for advanced beginner/intermediate player

This is a very accessible collection. (Note that it is misnamed by Amazon; the title is actually "Classical Guitar Repertoire: A Graded Anthology of Solo Pieces," and it has nothing to do with technique per se -- go to the Duncan method books for that.) Each piece has some inherent musical value, however simple it may be; and there is a mix of melodic pieces and technical exercises. Unlike many collections, the grade is not too steep; you should be able to play all or almost all of the pieces within a year if you practice diligently. Unlike the other reviewer, however, I would recommend starting with a teacher right away if you can find a competent one. I know that I developed a number of bad habits that took considerable work to get rid of, and I would have learned faster and had more fun if I had had a teacher.

Two-thirds of the pieces here are at what Duncan calls "achievement level two," a designation which matches his method book (a good buy on Amazon, although I've never used it much but do own it). The rest of the pieces are for the third-level student, and they are significantly harder but still within reach.

I would also recommend getting another book of Renaissance pieces if you enjoy that era as I do. The vast majority of the pieces here are Classical, and I myself prefer the Baroque and Elizabethan pieces. Also, if you want to learn something with a serious Spanish flavor, e.g., a Malaguena, you will have to look elsewhere, as Duncan is squarely in the Classical era. Sor, Carcassi, Carulli, etc. are here, but Duncan doesn't even include any Bach, although there is a beautiful little piece by Krieger and another by de Visee.

A Modern Approach to Classical Repertoire-Part 1

Absolutely a great book if you want some beautiful guitar pieces to play that are beginning to intermediate levels of difficulty. Fifty-five pieces of some of the historically best classical guitar pieces ever written. Some of the composers are: Sor, Giuliani, Carulli, Carcassi, DeVisee, Diabelli, Logy, Purcell and others.

Many of the pieces are perfect for wedding music, and can be easily sight-read if you are a moderately good sight-reader. All notation is clear and well-written, with very helpful left and right hand fingering suggestions included. NO TAB! (yeah!) so you will have to be able to read music notation but don't be afraid - the first few pieces are very easy.

I teach classical guitar and have many of my students purchase this book. The pieces in it add greatly to their repertoire and are very impressive to listen to them being played. I have owned this book for many years and it is one that I draw upon frequently. Maybe I should buy a new one since it is so worn now, but I'll wait until it completely falls apart.

About the Author
Paul Dugliss, M.D. practices Ayurvedic Medicine and Internal Medicine in Santa Barbara, California. He is the former director of the Oakwood Healthcare System's Complementary and Alternative Medicine Center in Westland, Michigan. A student of Ayurvedic Medicine since the 1980s, he trained both in the country and abroad. Dr. Dugliss has training in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as a masters degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. He is the author of several books including Ayurveda - The Power to Heal, Yoga & Ayurveda, Capturing the Bliss - Ayurveda & The Yoga of Emotions, and The Myth of Cholesterol.

This is awesome! Very detailed instructions with pictures. Clear pattern templates. Once you master making the doll from Mari's instructions; you should be able to make several different dolls. She gives you the knowledge of the basics and from there you are only limited by your imagination. The only inconvience was that you have to download and print. I would have perfered an actual book that I could add to my library. I would buy any books and instructions from this author on Fofucha dolls. She is amazing at teaching you the how to's.

The best reference and cookbook there is on true home cooking. The flavors achieved are spot on. Most of the recipes, especially the pasta dishes ,are from the Emilia-Romangna district, considered by most as the culinary capital of Italy. The illustrations, particularly those showing the method of rolling out homemade pasta dough, bring me back to childhood days An absolute must for understanding the essence and soul of Italian cooking. .

I purchased this cook book for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. She wants to try her hand at Italian cooking. I got my first copy over 30 years ago and I still use it. Northern Italian cooking is healthy and easy. I know she will love it as much as I do.

The Best Italian Cookbook in my collection

There are very few times when I cook that I do not reach for this book first. Marcella has provided extremely detailed, delicious and coordinated methods to put together an extraordinary meal. The way that she lets the reader know what courses should go first or next is amazing and always on target. You WILL impress your dinner guests! This, Rao's cookbook and of course Joy of Cooking are the essentials as far as I am concerned. If you think you understand Italian cooking then test yourself with this book. I guarantee that you will learn new and insightful ways to prepare food that you never imagined. The fresh pasta section alone is worth the cost!
