You get it when you get it

I have had a love-hate relationship with this book for a while. I've tried to read this book and make sense of it many times over the years. The book being funny puts you at ease but I believe it makes you lazy at the same time, you will look for fun over learning as the books sets you up, and when the emphasis is shifted from learning, you don't learn. This was my perspective. Hey, everyone is different. But everyone you talk to and reviews you read about this book, have been praising this book. So, I said to myself, okay I will start a fresh but only this time I want to learn, fun is fun but let me put fun in the background and bring the learning part to the fore front... That's it I cracked the code, invented light blub, well not exactly, but now I see what everyone mean. This book is a gem. I have learnt and am learning so much from this book. It not only teaches how to code but also teaches inner workings of Java thus making it clear to understand how code to written one way or the other. And it is ALSO funny, witty and whimsical which I learned not to get carried away with. When you get it you get it, this book is a masterpiece.

An unacknowledged gem!

This must be one of the funniest books I've ever read--I hadn't laughed out loud like this since Catch-22. The character of Miss Marjoribanks (that's pronounced "Marchbanks") is used by Oliphant both as a vehicle for social satire in the Victorian community and as an instrument to examine female modes of power in the Victorian home. The scene in which Miss Marjoribanks figuratively usurps her father's role as patriarch of the house by appropriating his place at the breakfast table is hilarious. Oliphant's book is wonderfully enjoyable and furtively serious--it may be light in tone, but it reveals a great deal about how a resourceful Victorian woman might seek modes and expressions of power within parameters that are very limiting.

The main character of Miss Marjoribanks is not intended to "grow" or "develop"--part of the pleasure of her characterization and her story is in witnessing how her single-minded mania as social director of her community compells her to overcome the obstacles thrown in her way by the novel's narrative. Why should we arbitrarily expose this book to aesthetic standards created by a handful of canonical novels? Miss Marjoribanks's characterization is as valid as any found in Austen or Trollope (though not necessarily as great as the best of them)--we must keep in mind that there was much more to Victorian fiction than what is revealed in the small quantity of canonized examples still read today. Oliphant was immensely popular in her day, she was Queen Victoria's favorite writer, and there were many contemporary critics who considered her to be one of the best novelists of that period.

In short, Oliphant's Miss Marjoribanks is a comic masterpiece, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any reader of 19th-century British fiction.

Funny and fetching

If you were to cross Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse with E. F. Benson's Lucia, the result (psychologically as well as chronologically) would be Margaret Oliphant's triumphant queen of Carlingford society, Lucilla Marjoribanks. Determined to show everyone an entertaining time (ostensibly "to be a comfort to dear Papa," even though her father tends to withdraw entirely from her noisy gatherings), the self-centered but always ingenious Lucilla engineers social triumph after social triumph in this very amusing mid-Victorian novel. There were many moments when I laughed out loud, or was genuinely surprised by Lucilla's cleverness in overcoming momentary catastrophes. This is the perfect book for anyone who has loved Austen, Trollope, or Elzabeth Gaskell's WIVES AND DAUGHTERS.

An absolute delight!

What a great find, and refreshing as it lacks much of the high melodrama so common in most 19th century literature. Miss Lucilla Marjoribanks comes home from school determined to be a comfort to dear papa and sets the good doctor and the entire town on their ears, with her brilliant manipulations.

The characters are wonderful, the story has lots of ups and downs that Lucilla is always capable of meeting with great ingenuity and fortitude. There are many wonderful moments and lots of laughter along with a few tears. Higly recommended, particularly for anyone who enjoys 19th century English literature.

Incredibly deep may be too deep for an average reader to understand..

First off, the original title of this book is "The Art of Being Yourself". That's the title of the original Russian publication. I have no idea why they changed the title in the American publication. Anyway..

The first time I read this book was back in 80-s when I still lived in the former USSR, long before my family and I immigrated to the US. It was an eye-opener back then and it is still an eye-opener now when I am re-reading it 30-something years later. Now, when I am a much older and mature person I can see and appreciate the depth of the author's visions of human mind and behavior, which I wasn't able to do in my youth. One thing I can tell is that I haven't yet encountered any mental health professional, who would have such a profound, holistic and unique understanding of human nature than Vladimir Levi.

Yes, the book is designed as a self-help guide as it has specific exercises intended to increase your self-awareness and self-control.They helped me a great deal back when I was young and read the book for the first time and I hope they will be helpful this time again. However, if you are someone who just looks yet for another populist version of self-help that instructs you on how to be happy, "successful" and all that non-sense, this book is not for you. All the techniques and exercises in the book only work in the context of your general awareness of yourself and life around you. In order to benefit from the book you need to be able to think deeply, you have to be someone who likes to reflect, contemplate, question everything and willing to de-program yourself from the cultural, familial and other types of mind-programming. This is not something that people, and especially people in the US, like to do. So, if you are not interested in reflecting and questioning your current belief system, the book may not be for you.

Simple, Straight Forward Lydiard - Even Addresses Current Trends

I give this book 5 stars because although the book is roughly 10 years old, it still is practical, current and the training still has merit. The book, perhaps like Lydiard, is direct and is barely 100 pages. But what makes it so current even today are his discussions of topics such as over engineered shoes that weaken the feet and can actually contribute to injury and this is written almost a decade before the now classic 'Born to Run'. In addition, he describes the need to 'run tall', landing lightly on the feet with low hands relaxing the upper body that allows the runner a slight tilt, which in many ways is very similar to POSe without concern for cadence. Of course a lot of the basis of the book is the need for base training, providing a foundation for racing. The confusion years ago with Lydiard supposedly endorsing long slow distance running is a myth as although
he advocated easy days for recovery days, a lot of long runs required a significant effort, they were not slow at least not for the non-comptetive runner. The other positive I like about Lydiard's methods is the break from routine training advocating fartlex, a free play style of running and not getting addicted to intervals on the track worrying too much about numbers. He was more concerned with the quality effort over numbers. There is a lesson in all this in keeping runners engaged by variety in training. Lydiard and Gilmour advocate that speed training can be added for peak performance at the late stages to allow for peaking but that also doing so after a decent base limits injury. The book includes a lot of basics covering injuries, rehabilitation, vitamins, running shoes etc. A nice range of subjects although they may appear basic for the well read runner. I had no problem with the pictures as I am somewhat familiar with the drills and I am actually utilizing some of the drills. They are important particularly for masters runners as we all lose flexibility as we get older and these drills help the synapses maintain that ability. As to the concern about the mileage, Lydiard is most likely addressing the competitive masters runners that can endure high mileage. In all books that provide training guides, you have to modify them in accordance with your own fitness, physical tolerance, proneness to injury and of course your goals. For me, an over 50 runner, I run 30-35 miles a week and do a modified mix of these workouts that include hills for my overall fitness and to compete at the local age group race level. To get a more detailed step up further on Lydiard's training style, consider the book "Healthy Intelligent Training' by Livingston, a Lydiard disciple.

Schedule is worth the price

This book doesn't go into detail about why you should do each of the exercises shown in the schedule, but I recommend this book anyway because the schedule for masters would be a useful guide. This is basically why I got this book.
I have read a previous book of his from '79 called Run the Lydiard Way, which gave the purpose of each of his exercises. Unfortunately this appears to be out of print, and I don't know if any other of his existing books provide the details.
For example, you do hill springing for ankle flexibily and knee lift, repetitions (time, distance, and quantity don't matter, as long as you feel tired at the end) for anaerobic capacity, leg speed and sprint training for speed and technique, 100 and 50m windsprints for sharpening and maintaining anaerobic capacity, and time trials for getting the body conditioned to running your race distance.
Some say his training concepts are outdated, but the fact is that all middle and long distance training are based on them. I have tried other schedules and have found his schedules to be the most effective for me. Some have said his 100 miles per week recommendation is outdated, but I have found his schedules will still work for you regardless of what mileage you decide to do.
Btw, fyi the 'old' man on the cover that another reviewer lammented over is an Olympic Bronze medalist (Barry Magee) in the '60 Rome Olympics, trained by Lydiard to be the fastest white man over the distance at that time.

Good stuff to jog an older memory

This book brings out points that older runners maybe weren't aware of or had forgotten. For instance the emphasis on the high knee kick was something I did naturally when in my 20s but after taking 15 years off from running, my body just doesn't do it naturally. I've begun to really notice my form in training. The emphasis on quality running vs. high quantity for older runners is sitting very well with me. I can't do high miles per week anymore but I make sure there's lots of quality. Exercising the posterior muscles to enhance form is something I never thought of. I think we all get in the habit of developing arms and chest for our egos and forget about the back. The book is definitely a jumpstart in attitude. I just wish they used a younger looking runner to demonstrate the exercises. I feel old looking at the book's cover and knowing its geared toward me, a 44 year old. The guy on the cover must be in his 60s.

A delightful book

This is a novel based on the wreck of the S.S. Politician off the Outer Hebrides during the Second World War. The author lived there at the time and has written an hilarious story. It has good language, good characters, and a good plot.

A delightfully comic yarn by a master story teller, Whisky Galore tracks the effects of a whisky shortage, and then a whisky surplus, on the fictional islands of Great and Little Todday, in the Scottish Hebrides, during World War II. A tale told with a tremendous love for the people and the heritage of the Hebrides. Highly recommended.

good amusing sea tale of the scottish hebrides

This is an outrageous story set in the Scottish Hebrides. Two rival islands suffer a lack of any drink due to the conditions caused by the war (WW2). This unfathomable hardship is providentially relieved by the running aground of a ship laden with (what else?) whiskey. Drinking is not this funny any more, so the light treatment it gets here is refreshing. Ha

About the Author

Harald Woeste lives in Bonn, Germany where he works as a designer and photographer for international clients. Digital photograhic panoramas was the subject of his thesis at the "Universitaet der Kuenste" in Berlin, and it has become one of the tools for his work as an artist and designer. One of the widely recognized projects of Harald Woeste is the panoramic capture of the exhibit "Einstein, Engineer of the Universe" in Berlin.

Detailed, Technical Education on Panoramic Photography

I found it interesting to read some of the other reviews prior to writing my own evaluation of this book. The information and approach taken by Woeste seems to be a definitely hit or miss with the audience that has chimed in. Here's why I think this is the case.

If you are looking for a simple step-by-step approach to getting a great stitched panoramic photo, this may not be the book for you. Though there is plenty of how-to type instruction with well documented screen shots, it is not presented in the recipe to success approach taken by some books.

Conversely, if you are the type that likes to get the entire picture (pun kinda intended in this case), including all the background, history, technique and philosophy to the panoramic technique, then this is the book for you. Woeste provides superb examples, front annotated behind-the-scenes setup views to beautiful examples of his own work, to compliment a thorough walk through panoramic photography. The history of the craft is included, giving some interesting background.

The detailed view of tripod heads & gear definitely puts this book beyond the avid amateur who is looking for just the basic simple software solution for stitching some photos together. Perhaps that is this books biggest difficulty, finding the right audience. Even so, for the photographer that enjoys knowing the deep details and options available in this area, I'd say this book is a good offering.

A very good guide to panorama photography

I found this book very valuable in providing a great deal of technical expertise on this subject. I enjoyed the historical section, although I was already very familiar with the old techniques presented here (I have been involved in photography for 47 years), but I think those who are newer will find it fascinating. The very explicit explanations of parallax problems and how to remedy them with special tripod heads and 'L' brackets was very informative. I also liked the information on vertical panorama techniques and how to correct the distortions introduced by shooting with the camera pointed up. Although I already know how to do much of what is in the book (from long years of experience), I really appreciated the thorough coverage of the subject and how it is related to digital photography and techniques. After all, digital cameras are so good at panoramic photography that essentially all camera manuifacturers have ceased production of their film panoramic cameras (Fuji, Hasselblad, etc.). Anyone interested in panoramic photography would do well to study the methods and techniques in this book. the reason that I gave it only four stars instead of 5 is that those who mainly capture landscapes, with no close foreground objects, will need only a small amount of the information presented in the book, which spends a lot of pages on avoiding parallax problems and their remedies in situations that most of us avoid. That said, you should still be aware of those problems, and their solution. And the author does offer more simple solutions than buying expensive, specialized equipment - making the book worthwile for that alone!

Aside from the obvious benefits of digital over other photography media, like greater control over exposures and post-processing adjustments, digital photography has enabled us to improve older techniques so that photographers are better able to convey their vision. Images that covered more than the normal angle of view, called panoramas, were first created in 1787, using large scale circular paintings in which the viewer was centered in the painting. Today, with very little additional equipment, a digital photographer can create very wide angle images, with great detail, by stitching together several separate images. He or she can even create virtual realities (also known as spherical projections), where a viewer can have the effect of being completely surrounded by an image. Particularly amazing is not just the angle of view, which can exceed any wide angle lens, but the resolution of the final image.

Harold Woeste provides an introduction to panoramic photography. After reviewing the history of panoramas, Woeste introduces the special equipment necessary to capture the images to be used in the panorama. While a panorama can be captured using a hand held camera, better results will ensue using a tripod with a specially designed head when shooting the series of images required for a panorama. The author then discusses the computer software necessary to stitch together the images. He also shows methods of outputting the images, which includes both wide flat prints of great detail and images which must be viewed on a computer and which allow the viewer to select any direction to look, including even up and down.

An important part of the book is the description of four different panorama projects that the author worked on, moving from the initial idea for the project, through the special considerations in capturing the images, to the use of multiple software packages to maximize the quality of the image, to the final output as a print or computer file.

On the other hand, Woeste's level of detail is at the familiarization level, not the practical level of actually taking the images or using the software. Thus, as I followed along I occasionally encountered references that I did not understand, such as control points, which were not related to the Photoshop CS4 software that I normally use, but are contained in PTGui, a more advanced piece of software that can be used for difficult situations and for spherical images. To fully comprehend what the author was saying, I had to download PTGui (there's a free trial available) and spend several hours reading the instructions (which were not very well organized) and even process a few trial images. On the other hand, snap shooters who aren't willing to spend the time and effort, are also not likely try their hand at panoramas, and understanding the uses of PTGui will certainly help if one encounters a problem where PTGui can provide a useful solution. I suppose I would have liked just a little more detail. For example, Woeste suggests that while PTGui is great for stitching, one can have better results if one saves the image and then blends it in Photoshop. Unfortunately neither Woeste nor the PTGui instructions mention that the stitched image must be saved as a PSD file rather than a TIFF to do this. Perhaps what I really wanted was a better PTGui instruction manual.

In any case, if you are a photographer who wants to move beyond the simple flat image capture and processing, wants to know what's available to help you create better panoramas, and wants to see some of the possibilities available in panoramic photography, this book will provide a good introduction.

NOTE: Since I wrote this review I've found that there is a way to save PTGUI files as TIFFs.

Great Content but a Brick of a Book

This book is a seminal text--and important for any serious designer or enthusiast to own. Munari is a master. The content is superb and classic. However, combining all three texts into one book has resulted in making what amounts to a hard-to-handle brick. Not to be negative, but one is probably better off purchasing each of the three books individually.

This book is perfect for everyone from historians of visual form, to graphic design students all the way up to professional designers and artists. Munari makes parsed connections between the shapes we all see everyday as conveyances in contemporary design (communication, products, architecture), and reaches back into the history of various civilizations in order to uncover archetypes, uses, symbology, significance, meaning and best practices. It's a pleasure to behold Munari's style: his combination of economical writing and visual case study.

The ideal companion of the Greenberg's handbook

This is an handbook of operative neurosurgical techniques. There are a lot of informations about the operating room supplies, the surgical instruments and equipment.
Are also present the major neurosurgical procedures, even if someone is not so common in the daily practice (p.e. Dolenc approach), and, there are not information about the posterior fossa approach(there is just the lateral and the supracerebellar approaches but no mention about the IV ventricle approach or something about the IV° ventricle or cerebellar tumors).
Maybe it also lack of figures and illustrations. There are not drawings for the surgical position and the Instrument Trays chapter are to much rich of informations (it, in my opinion could be more useful for a nurse).
I have presented this book to a couple of Collegues that live and work in a country in which the operating rooms supplies and the surgical equipment are not like in the USA or the Europe; so, it could be useful to bold the "essential" instruments or supplies for those who live and work in other countries.
I hope that the next edition will be more complete, and i will buy it again for sure.

not bad , not Greenberg

I bought it with high expectations believing that it would be as great as Greenberg.What a disappointment!It has 200 pages in the beginning totally useless, it has very few figures and it could have been more tightly written in fewer pages.The 3 stars go because it covers most of the neurosurgical procedures by providing the basic steps of them.With a little more work a good second edition is possible.

Experts describe the Operative aspects of cranial and spinal neurosurgical procedures for the residents and medical students. This is a useful quick pocket book outline. Black and white line drawings with shading occur throughout.
