About the Author
Mohsin Shafique Hijazee Mohsin Shafique Hijazee started his programming adventure by teaching himself C, and later C++, mostly with the Win 32 API and MFC. Later, he worked with Visual Basic to develop an invoicing application for local distributors. In the meantime, .NET came along and Mohsin happened to be working with C# and Windows Forms. All of this was around desktop applications, and all of this happened during his days at university. Very few people have had a chance to work with fonts, and that's exactly what Mohsin happened to do as his first job-developing OpenType fonts for complex right to left calligraphic styles such as Nastaleeq. He developed two different fonts, one based on characters and joining rules, and the other one contained more than 18,000 ligatures both of which are in public domain. His first serious interaction with web development started with Ruby on Rails. Shortly after that, he discovered Google App Engine and found it to be a very interesting platform despite its initial limitations back in 2008, with Python being the only available runtime environment. Mohsin kept experimenting with the platform and deployed many production applications and mobile backends that are hosted on Google App Engine to this day. Currently, Mohsin is working as a backend software engineer with a large multinational Internet company that operates in the online classified space in dozens of countries across the globe.

Be warned fellow programmers! This tome uses Python only. PAKT's promotions department does not mention this serious limitation. Note that Don Sanderson wrote his GAE books twice, once for Java and once for Python, PAKT should do the same!

"HALF MOON BAY" IS 100% FABULOUS !

As a fan of Meryl Sawyer's for quite some time, I am used to snatching her books off the shelf the minute they're unpacked, and "HALF MOON BAY" was no exception. I had been waiting for this book since I learned of it's existence last summer, and it was definately worth the wait. As usual Ms. Sawyer has turned out a fine mystery, a sizzling love story, and a group of characters that stay with you long after the last chapter. Amy Conroy has been forced to live with a hideous facial birthmark all her life, until a freak accident gives her a new identity, and a man to love her - if she can manage to elude another man who wants her dead. Matt Jensen, who made an all too brief appearance in "TEMPTING FATE" is back as the man who mistakes the badly injured Amy for "Shelley" -a woman who turned into a stalker after their one and only date. Twists and turns are Meryl Sawyer's specialty, and she's done her best to keep her readers busilly turning pages. Teasing references to great characters from novels like "THE HIDEAWAY" and "UNFORGETTABLE" help to make "Half Moon Bay" like a visit with old friends. Thanks Meryl, for making Half Moon Bay worth the wait - and for keeping us waiting for more ! DON'T WAIT. GET THIS ONE NOW !!!

Great romantic suspense from a master storyteller!

I liked this one even more than THUNDER ISLAND. HALF MOON BAY definitely belongs on the keeper shelf of all romance lovers. There was a nice, even balance between the suspense and the romance, and the characters were all too human.
Amy Conroy has always been disfigured--one side of her face has been marred by a terrible birthmark. As if that doesn't make her life bad, she's being pursued by a twisted sociopath. Then she's in a car crash and mistaken for one of the victims, Rochelle Raston. Amy's face is reconstructed, the scar disappears, and that's where the fun begins.
Matthew Jensen, an investigative reporter, would rather leave Rochelle Raston far behind. Being stalked by a maniac isn't his idea of fun. But he finds himself drawn to this new Rochelle, who doesn't seem as obsessive, who would rather have little to do with him, and to whom he finds himself irresistably attracted.
Meryl Sawyer makes you laugh and ache along with the characters, and sends chills down your back when the bad guys start to catch up. Matthew Jensen belongs in the Romance Heroes Hall of Fame for being one of the most likable, soft-hearted, but toughest men I've read about in a long time. He isn't vicious a cruel to Amy, though he has every right to be, since he thinks she's the stalker who threatened his sister.
The premise of this book was so unique to me. A woman who's gone through life disfigured suddenly becomes a gorgeous sexpot with a new identity. And gee...a stalker victim falling for his "stalker" :) Think of the mental gymnastics he's going through!
If you haven't read this, you'll definitely want to! The plot, characters, and secondary characters are fantastic!

Good story but with flaws

I found the sequel to Tempting Fate to be very good, but there was a few things that I found disturbing.
After an accident that caused extensive facial injuries, Amy is mistaken for another woman. Although "Shelly" had stalked Matt for the better part of a year, he felt obligated her help her. Amy, born with a large port wine stain on half her face, is called "The Beast". Afraid that her ex-boss will find her, she keeps quiet about the fact that she isn't Shelly.
After surgury, Amy is beautiful. Matt is drawn to this beautiful woman with a beautiful personality to match. Unable to explain his attraction to the woman who threatened to murder his own sister, Matt unsucessfully tries to stay away from her.
Meanwhile, Amy's ex-boss is desperately trying to find her because she uncovered the fact that he has murdered and is corrupt.
I found the story to be very good, but with many flaws. The biggest flaw of all was the "suspense" part of the story. The whole part of Dexxter and Irene could have been written out and the book would have been very good. Also, Matt's illness, I thought that it didn't play a big enough role. It should have been more a part of the story. Maybe his illness is a threat to their love, instead of the ridiculous story about Dexxter and Irene.
Overall, the book was good. I'd recommend it, although be prepared for a few disappointments

Philosophe, écrivain, journaliste, Jean-François Revel (1924-2006) a joué un rôle majeur dans la vie intellectuelle française pendant près d'un demi-siècle.

Matthieu Ricard, fils du philosophe français Jean-François Revel et de l'artiste peintre Yahne Le Toumelin, est moine bouddhiste, auteur, traducteur et photographe. Après un premier voyage en Inde en 1967 où il rencontre de grands maîtres spirituels tibétains, il termine son doctorat en génétique cellulaire à l'Institut Pasteur en 1972 sous la direction de François Jacob, puis part s'installer définitivement dans l'Himalaya où il vit depuis plus de 45 ans. Il réside au monastère de Shéchèn au Népal. Sous l'égide de l'Institut Mind and Life il collabore depuis une douzaine d'années à plusieurs programmes de recherches en neurosciences sur les effets de l'entraînement de l'esprit et de la méditation dans les Universités américaines et Européennes. Efficient textbook or self-study guide

An efficient self-teaching guide to mastering academic writing. It focuses on the researched essay, devoting one chapter each to an essay of a different type (or purpose): comparison-and-contrast, cause-and-effect, argumentative, classification, and reaction. Each of these essay examples is analyzed with respect to rhetorical focus and the presentation of critical thinking. Thus the student is presented with a good example of five major types of essay and is led through a nuts-and-bolts analysis of what makes it effective. Embedded within the instruction are examples which help the student to recognize bad grammar and clumsy style. This "remedial" material is based on the actual subject matter of the essays, making it easy and rewarding for the student. Learning efficiency is also bolstered by the authors' choice of essay topics, which include art appreciation, psychology, law & ethics, career planning, and literary analysis. Thus Effective Academic Writing can be used as a multi-purpose tool, applicable to junior- and regular colleges, ESL, adoptable as a textbook but equally useful for self-study and career enhancement, or as a guide to preparing a college-entrance essay.

This book is a true gem!

Brett Blumenthal has done it again! "52 Small Changes for the Mind" is truly a gem. If you're looking for an aid to help you jump start change and gradually implement those changes one week at a time, then this is the book for you. I love that the book takes a holistic and integrated approach to helping the reader implement change. It covers the following four areas to help you achieve mental well-being:
-Stress Management
-Concentration and Productivity
-Memory and Anti-aging
-Happiness and Fulfillment
Implementing one change per week is far less daunting than trying to take on multiple changes at once, and this book provides you with the road map and tools to nourish your mind. This time of year the focus is usually on becoming more fit and eating healthier, which are both important; however, it is equally important to nurture the mind, which leads to overall wellness. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to take better care of themselves holistically.

A solid guide for making lasting changes.

Brett takes her years of experience helping inspire and organize the endeavor to live healthier in our bodies, and helps us do the same with our minds. Of course, as Brett well knows, the mind is very much connected to our bodies, and an effort at balancing one, balances the other. I've long admired her ability to take such a broad area and such ambitious goals and make them bite-size, doable, enticing. This isn't just a book of tips--it's an approach to living. I see the criticisms of this book falling into two camps: One is the "it's for beginners, but not me since I'm so advanced," and two, "It's too ambitious and no one could really do this." Wrong, and wrong. You absolutely can follow and adhere to this, and no one is ever "done" doing them. Wellness takes ongoing tweaks and sometimes major overhauls. Anyone who thinks they can't do this or don't need to must look no further than themselves for why they feel stuck elsewhere in their lives. This is about as solid a guide as you'll find to make real changes, and if you do half of them, you'll be better off than where you are now.

Resource for the Novice

Most self-help books are fairly general, particularly when the author is addressing anyone instead of a targeted audience. 52 Small Changes for the Mind by Brett Blumenthal suffers a bit from the one-change-fits-all approach, but still offers plenty of ideas and resources for those looking to make mindful changes in their lives for the first time.

I would not recommend following this book as the weekly guided program it was intended to be. Not all of the changes are small (Be a Guru) and some will be costly (Get Out of Town). While I appreciate many people will like the Get a Rubdown change, those of us who are disabled, suffer from chronic pain or simply not comfortable with being touched by strangers would absolutely not benefit from it. Any changes in regard to diet should be first discussed with your physician before implementation; some may cause problems with certain medications or conditions.

This book is well-written, and has much to offer the mindful-living novice, but it probably should have been formatted as a resource reference versus a program guide. If there is a person out there who can actually make and maintain all these changes in 52 weeks? I bow to you in advance.

About the Author
Dudley Pope, a naval defense correspondent of the London Evening News, progressed to writing carefully researched naval history. C.S. Forester urged Pope to try his hand at fiction and saw the younger writer as his literary heir. Pope began what was to become an impressive series with Ramage (1965) and, over the next 24 years, produced 17 more novels tracing Lord Ramage's career. Pope died in 1997.

A secret mission to France

"If you wake at midnight, and hear a horse's feet, don't go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street. Them that asks no questions isn't told a lie. Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!" (from Rudyard Kipling's "A Smuggler's Song"). The smuggling trade plays a major part in this novel - it is tolerated to a point because it supplies certain luxuries and is a means of handling agents and intelligence during wartime. Like his other novels, Pope relies on the reader's knowledge of history to determine the time setting. The novel seems to be between 1801 and 1805, as it is after the first Battle of Copenhagen and, as Admiral Lord Nelson is still alive, the story must be before 1805. A good guess might place the novel in the later part of 1801. That leaves a major time gap between the end of the last novel in the series and the beginning of this novel. Later novels in the series jump back to fill in spaces left blank by earlier novels, so it is difficult for the reader to get the novels in a proper chronological sequence.
The novel spans a period of two to three weeks. The story tends to go into fine detail and, at a couple of points, I found myself skimming forward. Actual naval action is limited. However, there is considerable detail on the smuggling operations between France and England (the smugglers' primary loyalty is to money), and on the so-called "justice system" of revolutionary France (which kept the guillotine busy).
Ramage is given a special mission inside France as a spy to obtain vital information. The Royal Navy was willing to tolerate unusual methods and breaches of the law as long as it produced results. The blame would be on Ramage if he failed.
Overall, the story is an interesting tale of intrigue. Actual naval action is limited.

Ramage speaks with Lord Nelson and smugglers alike, takes passage for "Boney's" France, is astounded and becomes a shipwright, employs a thief, speaks to a policman of knives and sealing wax, and joins the French army! One suspects that Liberty - Equality - Fraternity meant only the liberty to reduce your brother citizens into equal misery. Of course, the British Navy's blockade also had something to do with the desperate state of the French economy revealed here (and rarely depicted in other seafaring series).
If you like stories of the Napoleonic era you'll enjoy this close up view of the French Terror into which idealists descended, but if your desire is only battle at sea this volume will disappoint. As far as I know this is the only nautical novel that brings its naval hero so far and long into enemy France (perhaps Pope is fulfilling the promise of C.S. Forester's "Hornblower During The Crisis" left unfinished by Forester's death before HH gets ashore).

Ramage (and Pope) are out of their element

This is easily the weakest installment in this series so far. While it is certainly readable, it is seriously flawed. First, there is almost no action at sea, which is the primary reason I read these books. Pope was very good at describing action at sea but, in general, his skills as a writer were only average. The plot is very thin, and the book really drags in the middle. The action picks up some at the end, but not enough to be really satisfying. The main problem with this book is that it just doesn't generate much suspense. Also, Ramage himself does very little in this book; he is just along for the ride as the smugglers and his subordinates do almost all the work. This book is not a total loss, however. I thought the details of the smuggling trade were interesting, and the picture Pope paints of France during the Napoleonic War is very vivid and interesting. Pope portrays France as a country tearing itself apart even as its Grand Army was conquering most of Europe. The government would execute a citizen simply because someone accused him or her of being a Royalist. This, of course, was a good way for a person to get rid of a personal enemy or business rival. It reminded me of what conditions must have been like in Stalinist Russia, where a paranoid government had its agents keeping a close watch on everyone. So, overall, it's not a terrible book, but I look forward to Ramage getting back to sea in the next installment.
