Signal: A Sam Dryden Novel, by Patrick Lee

Sam Dryden lives quietly in a small coastal town in southern California, buying and fixing up old houses. It's good physical work that he's come to love. But his peaceful life is shattered when he gets a phone call from an old friend in trouble. A phone call that pulls Dryden into the middle of a situation that's as violent as it is baffling.

For FBI agent Marnie Calvert, it all begins at a secluded trailer in the Mojave Desert-the scene of a horrifying crime, but also of an impossible and mysterious act of heroism. At least, it should have been impossible. Determined to learn the truth, what Calvert discovers leads her to Sam Dryden-an ex-Special Forces operative whose ordinary life has suddenly become anything but.

Through their actions, Dryden and Calvert have unknowingly placed themselves in the cross-hairs of a frightening and dangerous enemy, the result of a generations-long conspiracy finally coming to fruition. What these people have is a technology that allows them to affect events before they even happen. How they are planning to use it, however, will result in the death of millions. To defeat them, Dryden will need to do more than think fast-he'll need to think around corners, and face down an enemy that can seize on his mistakes before he even makes them.

Following the national bestseller Runner, Sam Dryden, Patrick Lee's most indelible creation, returns in one of the most compelling, breathless thrillers yet---Signal.

Excellent book full of twists and turns
By iiiireader
"Signal" is the first book I have read by Patrick Lee. I will shortly rectify that by purchasing at least four of his prior books, including "Runner" which is the first in the Sam Dryden series. I had no problems whatsoever picking up the action in this second book in the series. I had no idea there was a prior book and nothing in this book appears to have relied too heavily on "Runner." I often read books in the middle of a series and most of the time, it takes a considerable part of the book to catch up. I was extremely pleased that that was not the case here.

I read this book in a single afternoon/evening - not because it was short - but because I simply could not put it down. The main character, Sam Dryden is ex-military and ex-special ops. He has left that world behind and is trying to pick up the pieces of his life after personal events that almost crushed him. He gets a call from an ex-comrade, Claire Dunham, and is asked to drop everything and meet her at a certain place. As he trusts her implicitly, he does has asked. At that point, everything starts to go haywire. I don't want to provide any spoilers to the plot as I feel it is so unusual and compelling. While there are elements of almost science fiction thrown in, they are written into the plot in a way that makes you feel that the unbelievable can actually be true.

There are good guys and there are bad guys. There are parts that made me tear up (that's okay, girls can tear up at sad stuff.) What's unusual is that most male authors don't generally write things that are quite so touching for me. I am used to a lot of action and shoot-ups (which this book also contains) but Patrick Lee has given his characters a depth that is unusual in an action thriller. I find the two female characters to be as three dimensional as the primary male character. I could understand them as women and could see why they were behaving the way they did - again something really rare for me as a female reading a thriller written by a man.

While I enjoyed the characters, it is still the plot that kept me hanging on chapter by chapter. I frankly could not put it down until I came to the end. Admittedly, that was somewhere in the wee hours of the morning but that was okay as I had the day off the next day. I found the plot to be engrossing and had to bite my tongue not to tell my husband about what I was reading so he could enjoy the book after I was done with it.

It is always great to find a new (to me) author whose prior works I can enjoy right away and whose future works I can look forward to with a tad of impatience. Patrick Lee has certainly moved into that category for me and I recommend the book to anyone high school age and older who wants to read a well written suspenseful thriller.

Good, but not up to par.
By Bill Oterson
I've been a Patrick Lee fan since his book 'The Breach', in 2009. And Mr. Lee's creation of the "Sam Dryden" character in "Runner", in 2014, made for a thrilling, and exciting story that was packed with non-stop action throughout.

This second Sam Dryden book, though, "Signal", just isn't up to Mr. Lee's capabilities. The story is definitely original, with time travel being the main ingredient, a topic Mr. Lee excels at writing about. There's action, but it's muted somewhat and considerably less exciting. And the style of writing has changed, too, as there are twists to the story and surprises as well, however, not many; And I didn't find them very compelling as Mr. Lee gives them away readily and far too early.

In "Runner" Sam Dryden, was exceedingly capable, intelligent and secretive, like 'Jack Reacher', but more robust and interesting; like a "James Bond", without higher ups and gadgetry. In this telling something about Sam Dryden has diminished and I expected much more from his character. Three and a half stars.

GREAT START, STRONG MIDDLE, WEAK CLOSE
By David Keymer
Drawn by a call cut off in mid-message, a police team speeds to an address in the desert outside L. A. to rescue a young girl who’s been missing for over three years –kidnapped and never seen or heard of again. Until now. When they get there, they find a mobile home burnt to the ground. In the ashes is a cage. Inside the cage are the burnt remains of four young girls, abducted and held captive by a furtive recluse with a history of sexual abuse. The man’s dead too, consumed by the fire that burnt down his home and killed captives. Four hours earlier, Sam Dryden, a veteran with a classified military record, is contacted by a former comrade: she runs a private security business now. Sam needs to meet up with her –now! And Sam, don’t bring your cell phone! Soon they are racing to save the four young captives. They get to the mobile home barely in time to kill the child molester and release his captives before the house trailer is consumed in flames. What’s happening here? We have two different narratives of the same event, with radically different endings. That’s our introduction to the gimmick at the core of this high-action thriller. Someone has invented a very secret weapon with great potential both for good and bad. Some very bad guys want it for very bad ends. Soon Sam and his partner are running for their lives, pursued by villains who always seem to know where they’ll be even before they know themselves. There are a lot of close calls and a good deal of shooting before it’s all resolved. Signal is a fast-paced thriller that rips along for about three-quarters of the ride, then inexplicably slacks off on the accelerator for the closing. The weapon that leads to all of the shenanigans is scientifically implausible, but hey, that’s alright, it’s not the first time that the bounds of science have been stretched to make a good story. But the ending is sketchy and there is a serious drop in intensity as it winds down. It’s a shame because for three-quarters of the novel, it’s a gripping read.
