Murder in the Mountains, by Georgia Charles

Murder is traumatic and affects the lives of every family member, manifesting feelings of loss, sorrow, grief, anger, and gradual acceptance of the event. Murder in the Mountains: The Justus and Meadows Family Massacre is the true story of the murders of a mother, daughter, son-in-law, and three small grandsons. Even though the murders occurred over 100 years ago, the event still evokes an emotional response today, especially from the ancestors of Elizabeth Baker Justus (known in the community as Aunt Betty). Aunt Betty was a midwife and widow living in the small, rural community of Hurley in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Her youngest daughter, Lydia, Lydias husband, George, and their three children lived in the home with Aunt Betty. They lived a quiet and simple life until one fall evening when murder entered the small log cabin and forever altered the lives of an entire family and community. The motive for this unspeakable tragedy is as old as time money. Aunt Betty sold a large tract of timberland to the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company, a thriving business in the community. The person convicted of these murders was the Purchasing Agent for this company. Providing factual documentation, as well as the family history handed down through the generations, Georgia Charles presents the gripping and compelling story, detailing the tragic events that led to the murder of her ancestors. Murder in the Mountains: The Justus and Meadows Family Massacre is a thrilling page-turner readers will not discard until finished.

Great Book
By Earl Dotson
This is a well Documented book form Georgia Charles , Whom i know Personally, And is a Cousin of mine. It dates back to the Early 1900's, And Accounts for a Murder that Happen to our Family back in a little Town called Hurley Va. Well Done
By A. Lee White
This is an excellent effort by a new author. It gives a flavor of the rural Appalachians at around the turn of the twentieth century in much the same way as Horace Kephart's "Our Southern Highlanders". For this author it was a very personal family story that needed to be told factually but the story reveals material that could and perhaps should have been a much longer book. The details revealed in the last two chapters are chilling and beg to be fleshed out. It is also heartening to read true stories of the days when our legal system actually administered justice in a swift and sure manner. Well done! Georgia

Not Worth the Money. Google the Story and Read it for Free!!
By Bonnie S. Akridge
I just finished reading this. I am furious that I paid over $9 for a book that I read in about an hour. When the book description says you can't put it down until it's done, that is true. Blink twice and you're at the end. I knew before I read the "rave" reviews afterwards that some of them were going to be from family members. This book is really only for them and even then they get ripped off. The rich in history and details of the area takes about 15 minutes to read. I was very disappointed as I was hoping to settle in for a longer and richer history of the Hurley area and it's people. You know their ancestry and how they came to settle in Hurley. There is none of that in this book. I could have Googled the story and read all about it as most of Georgias' writing comes from other published sources. I would have had the entire story for free instead of what I paid for it. Shame on the author who thought her book was worth this much money. Shame on those in charge of agreeing to this price and putting it on Amazon

Awesome complete reference... A Myth breaker... Never had meditation made so easy before.
By Deepak Saboji
I have never before come across such a clear decimation of myths of meditation to bring true meditation to the front and make it so easy.
This book is a life reference to constantly remind me what is true meditation and be aware of the common mistakes made during meditation. The book makes it clear that meditation is not just a state attained being seated with closed eyes. The final goal is the state being steadily realised even while doing the most mundane activities in life.

The Finest Fantasy Yet Written
By A Customer
Don't freak out and spout the Tolkien line.....Mr. Hobbit is still the King and I love his work as much as everyone. However, one on one, Maia transcends any single work of fantasy by any author. The richness of storytelling, the depth of submersion you will slip into this story and the absolute believability of the world Mr. Adams has created is absolutely breathtaking.
I don't believe in giving a synopsis of the story. I'm a book fanatic and pitch my tent in the camp that believes a recommendation is good enough. If I for instance had based my decision of whether or not to read this book on a synopsis of the story....well, I wouldn't have read it. Good God I'm lucky I didn't. Instead I'll ask a question. You of course know the feeling of having just finished a book you enjoyed reading. Well, have you been lucky enough to (rarely, even for book fanatics) experience the `tears in your eyes' joy of having just read a book that you actually feel lucky to have found? I mean those very few times that, having just closed the book after reading the last page, you actually notice a few minutes later that you've been sitting there, in silence, still clutching this thing that's all at once no longer just paper and ink bound by glue? Yeah? Well that almost describes the soul deep satisfaction I feel each and every time I read this book.....and I'm not one that usually ever feels the need to read a book twice no matter how much I enjoyed it.
Go out of your way to find this book. I mean get in your car and scout used book stores. And then once you've found it, buy at least two more. I'm not joking. Always keep two for yourself in case one falls apart (trust me, you'll understand the feeling). That third copy.....share it. Please share it. It's just too damn good not to.

Epic complexity and beauty illuminate this masterpiece
By A Customer
Adams's Maia rivals the "greats" in its ability to create an entire world of believable characters, religions, and politics. The complex world in which the novel's action takes place is breath-taking. The novel actually serves as a prequel to Adams' previous endeavor, Shardik (itself an underrated and beautiful work), but Adams takes his Beklan Empire to new levels of epic sophistication with the introduction of the naive and good-hearted Maia; the grotesque and unforgettable Sencho; the wise and gutsy Occula; and the erotic, ambitious, and evil Fornis. Perhaps the only works of fiction more encompassing and completely original in their creation of an entirely new reality are Frank Herbert's Dune novels; however, Adams work maintains a beauty and sensitivity that is lacking in those science fiction giants. Overall I have to rank Maia as one of my all-time favorite works of fiction. I have read it three times and have to stop myself from picking it up again too soon in order to preserve the rewarding pleasure I receive from reentering Adams amazing world.

An epic story about a slave girl's odyssey in Bekla.
By A Customer
This is an absolutely amazing novel about a beautiful peasant girl, Maia, who is sold into slavery and becomes a concubine in the household of the High Counselor of the Leopard regime. The Leopards are the upper ruling class of the semi-barbaric Beklan empire, an ancient, beautiful, and sometimes deadly city. Along the way, Maia is befriended by Occula, an exotic slave girl, and unwittingly becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the Leopard regime. This book combines political intrigue, a quest for identity, a struggle for freedom, and this remarkable girl's search for her one true love, Zen-Kurel. Richard Adams is a master storyteller, and reading one of his works is like "being woven into a tapestry". His descriptions of the Beklan empire, his intricate plot lines, his attention to detail, and his use of subtle humor, all make this a story worth reading, and one you'll come back to time and again.

The Sea Dayaks of Borneo, with Illustrations, by Edwin Herbert Gomes

The Dayak culture of Borneo has long fascinated people, since the first outsiders entered the huge Island of Borneo. This unique and often misunderstood culture, has even influenced the English language with the term, “head hunters.”
Borneo has long been considered the last frontier on Earth, with ‘wild’ tribes still living inside dense jungles, with a fierce and proud cultural history. This frontier over 150 years ago was one of adventure, and discovery, were jungle trails led to the first meetings with the Dayak tribes, that inhabited Borneo.

The author Edwin Herbert Gomes, was one such adventurer, who in the mid 1850’s entered Borneo, and discovered the Sea Dayaks, a tribe that lived from the sea, rather than the land. Carrying a basic camera, and a mission to be-friend this untouched tribe, he wrote and photographed, one of the most unique tribal communities in the old World.

Discover another World, and through the images inside this book, meet the people, that formed one of the 'lost' civilizations of Asia.

The Asylum Soul, by Mal Foster

Lunatic asylums were an inescapable hangover of Victorian Britain and they harnessed a certain stigma borne from an environment of fear and shame as well as the great unknown. For many families the asylum system helped create their darkest 'skeletons', and for Thomas (Tommy) Compton, it was unforgiving. In 1929 he was 23 years old when his mother had him sent to the Brookwood Lunatic Asylum in Surrey, his only ailment - a simple speech defect. Based on Tommy's own diary notes, The Asylum Soul is a disturbing account of an innocent young life ripped apart by unthinkable institutional failings, false hope and ultimate family betrayal.

Heartfelt and insightfully brilliant!
By Amazon Customer
A really interesting insight into a real world of bygone mental institutions. The book brings a patients' diary to life, revealing his unfortunate confinement and with it the reality of the regime, and that of its lost souls. The book, as those who have actually read it can confirm, is set out like a diary, not chapters. The reading experience thus a journey through this man Tommy's time in Brookwood, as well as the world around him, and indeed in this tentative era between the wars. It is also reflective of a time of learning, identity and above all hope.
A fantastic read! I hope the author produces more of this quality.

A really bad, boring book. I read about 10 chapters and gave it.

Inca Architecture and Construction at Ollantaytambo, by Jean-Pierre Protzen

It is a modern-day mystery how the Inca, who did not have iron tools or knowledge of the wheel, mined and transported stones and dressed and fitted them in remarkable structures. Jean-Pierre Protzen has spent much of the past decade investigating the quarrying and stonecutting techniques of the Inca, and problems of Inca construction practices. His work is based principally on observation, careful measurements of structures, and experiments using stones and tools the Inca stonemasons would have used. Ollantaytambo, probably the best-preserved Inca town, offers an ideal laboratory with its well-thought-out site plans, its intimate integration of the built form with the natural environment, the unity of its architecture, and the sheer perfection of its cut-stone masonry. Offering the only extensive analysis of Inca construction practices, Protzen describes and interprets the archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo, discovers temporal and functional links among its components, uncovers the planning and design criteria that governed its layout and architecture, and compiles all that has been written about the site.

Inca Architecture and Construction at Ollantaytambo, Jean-Pierre Protzen.

I wish I had owned this book when I was in Ollantaytambo trying to decipher those ruins. To describe it will be both hard work and dangerous - dangerous because any honest review will sound like hyperbole; but it would be hard to exaggerate the qualities of this book. It is a work of breathtaking grandeur.

I'd never seen a copy before - I'd been to the UC Berkeley library to borrow it, but it was out. I knew it to be a well-respected study among Andeanists, one of the two primary publications on Inka architecture, and the definitive work on the Ollantaytambo site from any perspective. I hadn't been able to bring myself to buy it at the prices asked for used copies. Now I see why they can ask those amounts.

It's magnificent. It is awesome in all its dimensions; depth, breadth, height, and in detail, each separately. The guy left nothing undone (I say this before a complete reading, but I can already see that he's covered more than I would have considered, and in fine grain.)

The graphics alone. Beyond the many photos he has regional and local maps, topographical maps, floor plans, site diagrams, architectural drawings in cross-section, face-on view, angle view, and isometric perspective. Beautiful drawings of what now stands and speculative reconstructions of what they might have been like. Some he did himself, some from historical draftsmen and explorers like Bingham, Squier, and from the Gasparini/Margolies book "Inca Architecture"; and some originals for this book by, for instance, Robert Batson, who did the wonderful sketches for Susan Nile's The Shape of Inca History. And variations on these kinds of illustrations I don't have the vocabulary to distinguish. Charts, maps, pictures, plans.

He has names for all the places and constructions I just stared at wordlessly - names in Runasimi and English; and site plans to identify them in situ. He goes into this one site with nearly as many pages as Gasparini and Margolies do covering all of Inka architecture. I have only begun to see how many angles, with what fine attention, he approaches this place. He writes well, clearly, with no artifice and no attempt to beguile the reader, and he is credible in every word; he makes no questionable claims and shows no scholarly defensiveness; he's quietly confident in the solidity of his work. He's interested in it. He's doing his own research, filling what he recognized as a howling information vacuum, a deep deficit of knowledge about this place and all the elements of mind and method of the people who built made it. I'm going to learn a lot from this. Many questions answered, and good new ones opened.

Another graphic I forgot. The Inkas built storehouses, called colcas, wherever they went. You'd think they'd just put up a barn and stick stuff in it, but they were scientists, sophisticated in techniques of preservation. I happened to open this book to a point showing photographs of three-dimensional models of some of these colcas, built into a hillside; he and a two colleagues were blowing smoke in and around these models to study wind flow in the individual storage houses and showing how one would effect the flow to another - I haven't read it so I don't know what they were after, but temperature and moisture control were critical factors in the Inka calculations.

The first two-thirds, approximately, of the book are about the site itself, how it is now and how it was then, breaking it down, thinking it out, and the last third is about how it was done. This book is renowned for shedding the first real light on inka masonry and building techniques - before him it was mostly speculation, often bringing in aliens from another galaxy to do it with psychokinetic levitation, or by rendering rock malleable then hardening it again.

When I go back there I'm going to be a god. I may take up guiding just for the love of it. I've heard some of those guides spew some awful bullpuckey at trusting tourists. This book can be trusted and deeply enjoyed.
